“I’m definitely not always confident. But confidence comes naturally when I know what I want to accomplish, have a plan of how to get there, and know that I am capable of succeeding. Interestingly enough, opposition also hypes me up.”

Coco, you studied social media. Can you tell us why? And where do you see the dangers of the increasing usage of social media at an early age?

The individualized study program I created at NYU was focused on the music and entertainment industry. Since digital platforms were becoming more and more important in branding, the courses I selected explored various forms of both print and online marketing. Given the rise of social media, over time it has become one of the most used promotional tools for many including myself. As much as I see the value of social media, it’s worrisome to see so many users at such an young age. Their impressionability makes them especially susceptible to becoming overly absorbed in digital interactions.

Essena O’Neill just revealed the truth behind her instagram and the images posted on there and she also re-edited the truth behind her captions. Is there another truth behind your images as well?

Though many use Instagram for personal purposes, in my experience, if an account looks professional it probably is. As for myself, I love to use Instagram as a platform to have a more personal connection with a wider audience, and to build my brand as a DJ. I see it as a great business tool and a fun, expressive outlet. But I make sure to leave it at that and to post as consciously and transparently as possible. It’s so important to maintain a healthy, balanced life with strong and meaningful relationships, because digital interactions can only go so far.

You are labelled as one of the hottest female DJs. How does it feel, and is this something you are personally happy with?

From a business perspective, it’s great to be publicized. That being said, I see a lot more value in myself and my capabilities than looks. One of the proudest moments I look back on was one of the post-performance parties I deejayed for the New York City Ballet when I really felt in my element. The energy in Lincoln Center that night was unforgettable, and it honestly felt as if everyone picked up on it. I remember receiving some of the most sincere praise from the photographer and the dancers, and even months later, an incredibly heartfelt email from a guest. That is the kind of recognition that means the most to me.

“The most wonderful childhood memory? Catching fireflies in the backyard with my sister on hot summer nights.”

What creates your aura, this vibe of confidence?

I’m definitely not always confident. There are times when I feel nervous before a set, or anxious about a meeting. But I find that preparation leads to confidence. Confidence comes naturally when I know what I want to accomplish, have a plan of how to get there, and know that I am capable of succeeding. Interestingly enough, opposition also hypes me up.

The perfect party?

Dancing to throwback 90’s hip hop in a small, underground venue with just my closest friends and a good speaker system.

What music did you grow up with?

Everything. I grew up listening to my dad play the saxophone and piano, and my grandparents exposed me to classical music and took me to the opera. My music collection was mostly pop. I still remember the day in middle school when we watched a movie that featured a song by A Tribe Called Quest. It wasn’t the first time I had heard that style, but after scrambling to look it up and becoming equally lost in related songs, I realized how much I truly loved 90’s hip hop and R&B.

The most important thing in life?

Family.

The most wonderful childhood memory?

Catching fireflies in the backyard with my sister on hot summer nights.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I’d like to challenge myself more and more in the music field. As long as I’m exploring new places and things around people I love, I’ll be satisfied.

Words you live by?

The grass is always greener where you water it.
