“The pictures of myself are not only a document of my state of mind at the time, they are documents from my journeys both physical and psychical, so in that matter they definitely mean more to me than staged pictures of others.”
The 21-year-old photographer Hedda Selder, shares with us her passion for photography. She lives in Stockholm with her boyfriend and their two pets, a rabbit and a pug. As a student of interaction design, she tries to take every opportunity to make a few clicks with her device.
“Someday I hope to involve photo in my job as well, someway.”
One thing you love to do in your daily life.
Drink god coffee, take long walks with my pug Dagny and cook great food with family and friends.
How did you develop your passion for photography?
I got my first little crappy digital camera for my 12th birthday and I started to think about photos in a new way, I tried to take photos of special things or event from the start, things to remember or feelings to express. When I was in this age Internet communities got really popular and I think that the opportunity to show pictures to others trigged me to continue and to develop. I always loved to look at other photographs since the communications of photos are very direct and strong, feelings that I want to strengthen in my photography.
Tell us about your working tools. You are faithful to your Pentax K1000?
I got my first Pentax k1000 the autumn 2008, while studying photography in high school, we only got instructions in digital photography but we had a lot of old analogue cameras lying around that I asked if I could use, which I could. From the start I preferred how I tend to work while shooting analogue, with more reflection and thought before pushing the button, since then I got stuck and when my first k1000 broke in 2010 I got a new one, still my favourite camera, we are such a good team.
Why analogue?
Since it makes me better, more confident and more careful. And of course I love the rough feeling in the photos.
Do you think that using the analogue helps to create a state of nostalgia in your photos?
I think that it is a combination of the motive and the technique, but I would say that analogue in general gives a nostalgic touch in the photos.
You appear often in your photos … Besides being behind the camera do you also like to be the model? Do you feel closer to your photos this way?
Not when it comes to standing in front of others cameras, I’ve been taking photos using myself since I got that first camera, so I feel very comfortable standing in front of my own camera. I know what I want of myself as a model, and can decide on every detail in another way than if I use someone else. Though, I love to take photos of others, but I think that the pictures I take of people I know well turn out better than the pictures of people I don’t really know personally. The pictures of myself are not only a document of my state of mind at the time, they are documents from my journeys both physical and psychical, so in that matter they definitely mean more to me than staged pictures of others. But I think it can be negative that I have all this information about the pictures that all viewers don’t get. What do I forget to tell the others? What do people see while missing this information?
Next year you want …
To realize a photo idea that includes my twin brother, to travel and to try shooting medium format.
Your favourite phrase.
“In every joke there is a shred of honesty” my mum always said when I was a kid.
