Maki by Shuji Kobayashi for C-Heads

We just love this beautiful exclusive story by Photographer Shuji Kobayashi (Kind Inc.) in which Model Maki embodies this stunningly pretty and gracious Asian woman embedded into the simple architecture of her surrounding. Designer/Stylist is Ayaka Sato describes her clothes on this shoot as “elegant yet vulnerable… supposed to be worn on a naked body, but I intended to use a lot of sheer materials and slits.” “I chose “vulnerable” because I notice the sense of fragility in the word. I think that is the moment that I wanted to capture.” Hair Make up are done by Takashi Hida (Kind Inc.) A story full of details and a softness and serenity that carries a lot of strength.

Los Angeles – A poem by Vanessa Matic

It was a strange place to be
I was on land America was a
haunting dream
It was so empty downtown my
love can be drowned out
You knew the moment was right
As I entered into your sight
The stale sensation of blithe
madness such tranquil sorrow
of sun
And who could escape now

Beach with Camila and Mountains with Fernanda by Mariana Caldas de Oliveira

It was dawn when we took the road away from São Paulo. The fresh morning breeze got mixed up with the noise of the city that was already in its daily fast pace, but it didn´t take long until the concrete rush made place for a calm feeling of happiness. The noise was left behind and now it was the fresh smell of the atlantic forest that invaded our windows. One hour later our feet were already comfortably layed on the sand of São Pedro´s beach, in Guarujá. and only then this brown eyed doll took me to take a walk in her world of salty waves. Camila Othon is a videomaker and surfs with her heart. She can´t stand still without the sea breeze, the wind blowing on her face. without her body in movement. What she wants is go out there, conquering more and more of the lost paradises. And I can only thank her for the chance of getting sand all over my apartment, and sleeping like an angel, after a day of sun, sea, and air.
Fernanda Lensky is another muse of my life. I just love the way she moves. The way she smile with her eyes. The way her hair dances. And the fact that she always takes me to the most delicious photographic adventures. This time we went to a small village by the mountains, near São Paulo, called Paranapiacaba. The sun was shining on us when we arrived at the small town that has lived its glory days giving shelter for railroad workers. Now this little city is a loved destiny for one day tourists, because of the old trains left at the abandoned railways and the sweet Victorian style of the city´s architecture. So we just spent our day flying around, between abandoned warehouses, taking clothes off and putting them on again and having so much fun trying to be invisible in the crowd. At the end of the day, when a mystical mist suddenly covered the little village, my heart was just feeling love. And I understood how photography really did save my life.

“When I saw the first picture of Izzy, I knew I wanted to do a shoot with her. She has this natural coolness, we probably all wish for. And then we spent the day together with my favorite team and I just couldn’t stop shooting. I love the diversity Izzy has, between naive youth and grown up maturity. “Photographer Muriel Liebmann and Model Izzy Jarrett at Modelwerk are such a perfect combination for this exclusive C-Heads editorial, that was fabulously styled by Annika Schmeding. Sophisticated coolness and a timeless touch. Hair and make-up was done by Carolin Jarchow using Chanel products.

Brighton based hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks dropped a new visual for “Tell Her” shot by the Lennox Brothers. The two talented childhood friends Jordan “Rizzle” Stevens and Harley “Sylvester” Alexander-Sule first started making music together in 2008 on the Minor Breaches of Discipline mixtape. And the video sees the boys ripping up town in a monster truck and making many friends along the way. A feel-good song and once it finds its way into your ear, never leaves. Perfect for summer.

“Family photos depict smiling faces… births, weddings, holidays, children’s birthday parties. People take pictures of the happy moments in their lives. Someone looking through our photo album would conclude that we had led a joyous, leisurely existence free of tragedy. No one ever takes a photograph of something they want to forget.”
-Sy Parrish (One Hour Photo 2002)
Probably you stumbled already over this interesting short film “What’s on your mind? directed by Shaun Higton. Premiered at The American Pavillion at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival it´s already a big youtube hit with more than 8 million views. So far the film is translated into around 25 languages and they are working on even more. If you would like to contribute to any some of their missing languagesdrop them a private message on youtube. Produced by Andrew Higton/Espen Pettersen and cinematography by Hans Kristian Riise the video is very thought-provoking. Girly punk rock denim meets playful illustration. Portland based brand Wildfang just dropped their latest youthful collection ‘The Wolf Pack”, with a cool set of VHS gifs and a lovely lookbook shot in the suburbs of London. Photographed by Hayley Louisa Brown and styled by Laura Walters the shoot follows the three girls Hannah Gillespie at Models 1, Manna at Models 1 and Chloe Flowerdew at FM Models around their neighbourhood creating havoc and unruliness in the gloom of suburbia. Good moments and we fell so in love with that stunning denim jacket.

“Photography and Remembrance” A talk with Francisco Marin

“Pretend you and I are old friends. You know me and I know you already. Let’s have fun with this and keep it as chill and laid-back as possible.”

is what New York based photographer Francisco Marin usually tells his models during a shoot. He loves to go with the flow and keep things light-hearted, nevertheless we all know that in order to make it in a city as New York as a creative person (or anything else you do over there really) you have to have a few more aces up one´s sleeve. Which he certainly has. His stunning images have helped him to collaborate with clients such as Kenneth Cole, Rolling Stone, Vice Magazine etc. and model agencies such as APM, Ford, Frame and many more. We had a very interesting talk to him about the pros and cons of living in NYC and about changing the perception of reality through images.

IMG_0225-865x1280
Describe your work in one sentence.
Casual fashion portraits, sometimes tinged with angst, mystery, sexiness, or all of the above.
“People take pictures of the happy moments in their lives. Someone looking through our photo album would conclude that we had led a joyous, leisurely existence free of tragedy. No one ever takes a photograph of something they want to forget.“ It reads on your Tumblr. Really true. Your words? Do you think that this changes the perspective of reality?
That’s so funny that you mention that. That’s actually a quote by a character named Seymour Parrish in a film called “One Hour Photo” (2002). It’s a psychological thriller film starring Robin Williams as Seymour, who works at one of those one-hour film developing labs (keep in mind, in 2002 people still developed a lot of film rather than taking digital photos). Seymour had been collecting and harvesting photos of happy families, kids, wives, and husbands from his photolab customers and making a giant scrapbook while pretending those people were his actual family and slowly going insane over the course of the film. It’s a really chilling, weird, scary film, but his quote rings so true for me.
I think most people use photos as a way capture the moments we want to remember later on. Maybe not all of those moments are truly happy or joyous, but you can’t deny that there’s a strong connection between photography and remembrance. Otherwise, what’s the point of taking a photo? I’ve had a couple of friends mention that they actually do take photos of things they want to forget — mental and physical scars, melancholic vignettes of their daily lives, whatever evokes heartbreak and tragedy. But I think the very act of taking pictures of these darker moments is contradictory to the act of forgetting. It’s one of those things that’s hard to explain but easy to understand.
When we keep the subject; in your portfolio there are only beautiful images of beautiful people. Personally, is there anything where you would draw the line and you would not photograph it at all? Or asked differently, is there anything you want to photograph besides fashion and lifestyle?
When I started taking photography seriously, my style was a bit all over the place. I liked shooting landscapes and cityscapes, portraits of people (and not necessarily models), food, drunk nights out with friends. Last year, I got a scathing review of my website from a photographer I really admire so I decided to cut down my portfolio to just images that represented the very best of the kind of photography I’m interested in, which is lifestyle/fashion. Now, my website is much more accessible to clients that want to book me, but unfortunately I feel like I’ve lost touch with the art crowd that I originally found a lot of support from when I was making dreamy double exposures on film and taking a really capricious approach to shooting. However, my Tumblr blog is a total free-for-all. I post a few times a week and I’m always hopping from one style of photography to the next.
The best thing about living in New York?
Seeing the entire city glow peach and orange at sunset from a tall rooftop. Loft parties, dance parties, rooftop parties. Seeing the trees in Central Park turn every possible shade of red and gold in autumn. Getting lost in the Upper West Side for the first time and standing in awe of the massive skyscrapers. Going out with friends until bars close at 4am, eating $1 slices of pizza, and then grabbing a taxi home, rolling your windows down as you go back over the Williamsburg Bridge as the sun starts to rise over the East River.
Making eye contact with the most beautiful woman in the world just before the train door closes. [like this] And your train and her train ride side-by-side until the trains split in different directions and you never see her again. Meeting people who are inspired, passionate, competitive, driven, and beautifully mad in their life pursuits.
IMG_3275
And the worst?
The obscene amount of money it takes to rent an apartment in a good neighborhood. Garbage overflowing in trash cans and on the street. Walking underneath sweating, dripping air conditioners in the summer. Slipping on dirty black snow slush in the winter. When I came here I hoped to hear jazz music in the streets at night, not police sirens and garbage trucks. It’s impossible to have a good dating relationship here. The city wears you down day after day and you want to escape but the city keeps you in her claws, and sometimes you like it that way. Sometimes you’ll be surrounded by hundreds of people and feel completely lost and alone.
What is the usual creative process at a shooting?
The creative process for me is highly unstructured. I love to “go with the flow” and keep things very lighthearted. A week or more before the shoot I’ll send my models a mood board of images that show what I want the aesthetic of the shoot to be and we’ll work together to emulate the mood, scene, and emotion of those photos. But during the actual shoot, I usually tell models: “Pretend you and I are old friends. You know me and I know you already. Let’s have fun with this and keep it as chill and laid-back as possible.”
What camera do you use?
Right now a Canon 5d Classic (it’s old but still has the best colors of any camera I’ve used). A Canon Powershot S120 for street shooting and snapshots. For analog film cameras, I use a Mamiya 645, Holga 120 CFN, and a Canon AE-1. Soon I’m hoping to purchase either a Canon 6D or the Sony A7.
And how do you reset to be creative?
Sometimes the best way to stay creative is to stop for a while, take a step back, and look at how your work has changed from 2-3 years ago. I also am constantly soaking up new inspiration from other photographers on Tumblr, Instagram, and sites like C-Heads. One of my favorite film directors, Jim Jarmusch, also has some amazing advice for staying creative and inspired: “Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent.”
Who is your celebrity crush?
Oh, that’s difficult to say. I’m always really drawn to people I think would be interesting to photograph. Right now I’d give anything to get close to Mélanie Laurent, Emily Ratajkowski, Olivia Wilde, and the band London Grammar.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
It’s been a huge goal of mine to start working with more brands that fit my aesthetic and 2014 has proven so far to be much more business-focused than 2013. I’m definitely hoping to photograph a really great lookbook for a fashion brand the next year or so. My dream would be to shoot editorial lookbooks for brands like Band of Outsiders, Madewell, or Nasty Gal.
A questions we should have asked you?
What’s my favorite pizza? A puff pastry croissant dough with anchovies, black olives, goat cheese, sea salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil. Served with Basil Hayden’s bourbon whiskey.

London based photographer Andi Singer teamed up with the two 25 year old beauties Sarra Tsorakidis and Raya Al Souliman to create this youthful story exclusive for C-Heads. “I took two of my dearest friends to a special place on the Danube shore. Where Romania meets Bulgaria and Serbia, at the Cultural Port Cetate, an old trading port, rehabilitated as an artist retreat by the famous Romanian poet Mircea Dinescu. I love the way that Sarra and Raya have such interesting features and how they are such a diverse mix of oriental genes. Sarra is half Greek, and Raya is half Syrian. They have been best friends since before I met them and I’ve always found endearing the fact that they’re so different, but still complete one another so well. I love how different they are in body types and yet they both have the stunning beauty and enticing attitude that my young generation has. I wanted to create the type of mood that evokes happiness and beauty without even realising it.” Enjoy party one and get lost in the sunkissed dreamy world of good moments, friendship and timelessness.

Ola Ajani captured former miss England Alize Lily Mounter in her new apartment in the London Suburb of Richmond Upon Thames. “It was a hot Summer afternoon in her sun filled flat with makeup artist Anastasia Smith providing her magic.”

What is a typical day like for you?
A typical day for me is hard to describe as each day is different. Usually I am darting about London for castings and photo shoots and meeting up with friends Next week my family is visiting for my graduation as I also studied Journalism & Drama for three years and this week I have just began a Nutrition course. I enjoy learning out side of modelling and to push myself at every avenue I am passionate about – so my life is very varied at the moment and that’s the way I like it. Although usually I always seem to be shopping for fresh food to cook at home – or doing some form of exercise.
How do you keep in shape/look after yourself?
I like to vary my exercise as I get bored quickly. At the moment I try to switch it up between HITT (High Intensity Interval Training) at the gym, yoga and running. I really enjoy eating healthy, fresh food and most of the time I follow a Paleolithic diet. Which focuses on fresh organic meats, vegetables, fruits and nuts. For me it’s not about being skinny as I absolutely love eating but making sure my body is completely healthy from the inside with food that is good for me.
How would you define fashion?
For me fashion is an expression. It can be so many different things to different people but I’m passionate about how it can be used as a complete expression of someones personality or anything. For example a feeling, a time, a memory, a dream. One day I can be wearing pretty clothes the next day I look like a complete tom boy because for me it’s a form of how I feel that day. I like experimenting with different clothes but usually I opt for clothes that are timeless and comfortable. I enjoy traipsing around vintage stores for quality clothing – I usually end up being vintage denim, cool footwear or anything boho inspired. I think sometimes my passion for ‘a healthy mind, body and soul’ influences by fashion sense.
Is there a expire date for working as a model?
I think there is if you want it to be – it is maybe more difficult if you have a strong particular look that will go out of fashion so to speak. But like any other form I think a model can also ‘reinvent themselves’.
What do you expect from life?
I don’t expect anything  - except a journey. I see like as an opportunity and adventure. People should try make the most of it and enjoy the ride!
