Zeiten ändern sich
aber ein Klassiker bleibt Klassiker

Juhu, einmal aufatmen!

Also alles gut! Scrabble bleibt Scrabble! Tja, da bleibt uns nur noch zu sagen: Höchste Zeit mal wieder einen Spiele Abend mit guten Freunden zu organisieren, wer ist dabei? Happy Birthday Scrabble!

“It was one of the last hot summer days in Stockholm.” tells photographer Jacek Szopik. “Me and my friend Klara Kassman of Le Management decided to take some pictures in her apartment. Klara is a young, beautiful creative soul. She is painting, drawing and working with sculptures. Her apartment is a real workshop. Every face from her paintings or sculptures is “looking at you… somehow looking into your soul”. A last shaft of summer sunlight was touching our faces and when the sun disappeared we decided to take some black and white photos.” he continues. “Klara loves fashion and art and local Swedish designers. Her artwork and style is very inspiring for me and we had so much fun shooting together.”

The work of Natalia Skotnicka focus on simple sensual photos of women. Through her works she wants to depict a real truth and beauty of the model. Her trip from Poland to the Ukrainian capital Kiev, resulted in photographs with Diana Jurczenko, a Polish girl who currently lives in the city. A soft morning light and an apartment in one of the townhouses in the center of Kiev made sensitive vibe. Hand-made underwear by TKACZ added some piquancy. This series shows the model as a self-confident, sometimes delicate, petite creature that immediately changes into a woman who is footed heavily on the ground. Photographer and model wanted to show that femininity is the head of emotions. Make up done by Marie Sova

“The only way to find real sustainable happiness is to slow down.” A talk with Alina Lee

$

We are having a crush on Alina Lee alias ohthumbelina for a few years already. Her self-portraits are somehow different. Not smoothly polished, but multidimensional. Melancholic, profound, thoughtful and always simply beautiful. We are happy to see that she released her first self-portrait book and sat down with her to talk about true freedom, imperfections as another marketing tool and finding happiness and showcase some exclusive images out from her book.

You have been taking self-portraits now for several years. What still fascinates you about taking pictures of yourself, how have the images changed over time and what do you think about your old work nowadays?

I’ve changed so much over the last few years. I was only nineteen when I started doing self-portraits and now I’m just twenty three, but I think your early twenties are a time of tremendous growth. The photos I used to take were all with an old digital camera and they were straight forward, pretty & simple. There are a few in Hello Heartache that I still love. Looking at my old self-portraits always bring me back to the mental place I was in while shooting them which I find not exactly nostalgic, but endearing. Nowadays I use almost entirely film and I like making a character when I shoot or at least having some sort of strange element, I like things a little weird.

“Life feels like such an illusion sometimes. I feel like I could just slip out of it, it’s utterly elusive and impossible to make sense of. So true freedom for me is embracing that.”

In one of your instagram postings you said: “I don’t take any of the compliments personally on here in regards to my looks. I do not look like this. No one looks like their photos- not really. I see my photos on here as paintings maybe? A sliver of life captured, cleaned up, hopefully telling somewhat of a story but always glamorized, always in the best light, even when it’s sad or dark. I do hope we all grow sick of this pursuit of perfection, it’s incredibly depressing and dull.” I agree to it to some extend, however I think it´s also human nature to f.e. only select the beautiful moments in life for the photo album. It´s what we like to remember, the beautiful moments, right? And don´t you think that anyway there is already a lot happening out there promoting imperfection, including big companies, brands and celebrities, so “imperfection” has become just another marketing tool as well?

I love this question- I love discussing these kind of topics especially with people who don’t have the exact same perspective, it always makes for new revelations. I think you’re absolutely right, human beings (reasonably) only choose to highlight the best in life. I think, exactly like you said, imperfection is becoming a marketing tool and it has its positives, of course! But I think it’s also detrimental. This is maybe not the best example, but I think of those photos of Christina Aguilera “bare faced” for Paper magazine. It’s great that it’s showing a more natural beauty, you can see pores in the photos after all. But they’re still cleaned up, itty bitty pores on someone who has access to all the best beauty treatments. What I’m saying is that no matter the model, no matter the editing, no matter the message, it’s still marketing. And marketing isn’t real. What I should have said instead of “perfection” is that I’m sick of our society’s obsession with the surface level. IE anything appearance related- material possessions, maintaining an “image”. I think we’re all like the cartoon bunny with a contraption around it’s waist to dangle a carrot just out of reach. I believe even these big companies are in a way over their heads and don’t even know it, they don’t have any idea the implications this will have on the world in the next five, ten, twenty years. We’ve become hyper-consumers and we are rushing through life at top speed trying to get a fix. Trying to feel good. It’s really so sad because the only way to find real sustainable happiness is to slow down, it involves nothing but you. I went to a meditation retreat last year and it was complete ecstasy, another level of happiness that I’ve never felt before. But our society is so intoxicating, the highs and lows. I don’t blame us all for getting so wrapped up in it.

“The biggest thing I understood after finishing the book is that humans are multidimensional. It’s very easy to get stuck in patterns, to react the same way over and over.”

I agree with you and we could discuss even more about that. However, moving to another topic – you have just released your own book showing self-portraits and texts you wrote. Why did you name the book “Hello Heartache”?

The last three years while I’ve been working on Hello Heartache have been some of the hardest I’ve ever had because of so much growth, and hence, so much heartache. Like you mentioned, I decided to add some of my writing to the book and the last page has the words, “when my heart aches I know I have done something brave (like loved)” I don’t just mean romantic love, though it has been a big part of my life the last few years, but also self-love and love for the world around me. I’ve had to unravel a lot of false core beliefs, it’s been very humbling and freeing at the same time.

“The only way to find real sustainable happiness is to slow down.”

The design of the cover fits certain characteristics of a classic romance novel. Why did you go for that design?

I love romance novels! I’ve only read a few, as we all know they’re notoriously bad, but the covers are so beautiful. Most of the covers are painted so they portray this glimpse into another world that is utterly mysterious. Unlike a photograph you can’t really imagine this impossibly beautiful character in any other way than exactly how she is portrayed in the cover. Even though I chose a photo, I love the drama and mystery that comes from a romance novel cover and that’s what I wanted to portray. My friend Stefan Anderson did the graphic design, he isn’t even a graphic designer and he did a phenomenal job!

„I think we can all relate to taking ourselves too seriously and falling into the exhausting rules and games of, well, being human. Art is an escape from all of that.“ is your introduction to this book. And that working on it has been therapeutic. While creating the book did you find some answers or solutions for yourself, your life?

The biggest thing I understood after finishing the book is that humans are multidimensional. It’s very easy to get stuck in patterns, to react the same way over and over. Making art on my own, on my own terms, makes my personality melt away for a period of time. I‘m no longer my insecurities, my hopes, my beliefs, etc, I’m a spark of creative energy in perfect flow and the last thing on my mind is if anyone will like it. I think that approval is the creatives worst enemy. This definitely melted into all other parts of my life, as someone who dealt with being bullied while growing up and has always had a deep desire to be accepted (don’t we all!) finding my own unique energy and embracing it, fueling it, has been so rewarding.

“We’ve become hyper-consumers and we are rushing through life at top speed trying to get a fix. Trying to feel good.”

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I get asked this a lot and I think it’s one of the best questions you can ask someone. I want to keep growing as a person, I want to continue to nourish my friendships/relationship. I want to embrace failure and take more risks. More than anything creatively I want to do more acting. Acting is my absolute favorite creative outlet, I get so giddy whenever I get to act. I love being able to slip into another universe. I think that life is so utterly complex and magical, acting is like being able to go behind the curtain of it all.

What does true freedom mean to you?

I think true freedom is being able to live in total embrace of life. Embrace of failure, fear, joy, love. Being able to get onto the roller-coaster of life and enjoy the ride. Life feels like such an illusion sometimes. I feel like I could just slip out of it, it’s utterly elusive and impossible to make sense of. So true freedom for me is embracing that. I think of that part in Eternal Sunshine where Jim Carey and Kate Winslet are jumping through their memories together, and at first they’re devastated and clinging but eventually they get near the end and Kate Winslet’s character asked what should they do, and Jim Carey’s responds, “enjoy it.”

I also just want to say a quick thank-you to all my friends, especially Nicole Nygaard and my boyfriend, Raul Gonzo, for helping me take photos when a self-timer wasn’t an option and being so supportive.

KIKA´s smile easily lights up all the room. Modelling to her is not just to look pretty for your social media feed. For her it´s about spreading self acceptance. Over the course of four days photographer Ray Litsala captured Kika on 35mm film in Annecy and Paris.

What inspired you to be in front of the camera ?

As far back as I can remember, I’ve had a habit of scrutinizing the way models strike the pose to give emotion to their character. It’s fascinating! To me, posing is not about being pretty to feed your social media. Posing is about expressing yourself without words. But the real reason that pushes me to be in front of the camera is the will to spread self acceptance. Thanks to the Internet, I discovered a huge diversity of beauty through every skin tone and every shape. I get inspired and I wanna inspire at my turn. It took me some times but now I love my Afro hair and my skinny body no matter what standards can say about it. I got spotted because I embrace what makes me different and I’m very proud of it.

“It took me some times but now I love my Afro hair and my skinny body no matter what standards can say about it. I got spotted because I embrace what makes me different and I’m very proud of it.”

What was your upbringing like ?

My mother had to run away with her 3 children from domestic violence. When you’re a single mother, you can’t fail. If you’re falling, the whole family falls with you. So my education was very strict on the basic principles such as being humble, respectful and working hard to be independent. Besides that, we were totally free to be who we wanna be. She would never interfere in our choices as long as it made us happy. Basically my mom is a mix between Bree Van de Kamp and Iggy Pop. Your room must be clean but your spirit must be rock’n roll. I feel so lucky to have such an open-minded feminist and veggie family.

Happy birthday from us, how was your birthday celebration ?

Thank you, that’s adorable! Well, it was quiet. I had a whole week-end of shooting with Ray, so it wasn’t a good time to have a hungover haha. We went to a small underground club that I love. They were playing House music on that night so we danced a bit and drank a beer.

“I just hope our virtual image won’t take over the real life. A random « Like » sent behind a screen could never compete with real human interaction.”

What are your 3 favorite places in Paris?

N° 3 : Montmatre. I know it sounds very cliche. I’m obssessed with « Le fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain » since I’m 6, so that makes sense. laughs. More seriously, I could never get tired of all theses streets art. They’re so many charming things to discover over there if you take the time to loose yourself.

N°2 : Po Boy Café, my favorite place to brunch ! It’s a chill and cozy place where you’ll eat hand made delicious meals from Louisianna! On a sunny day I enjoy sitting at their terrace in front of Canal Saint-Martin. Moreover the team is friendly and the prices are totally affordable.

N°1 : Definitly the thrift shops! I could spend hours searching for a vintage crush.

How much time do you spend on Instagram and what could be the future of social media ?

Too much time! This is my favorite social media… anytime I have free time, I’m looking for inspiring accounts to follow. In our days most of people are their own brand and act in consequences. They need more and more visibility to show how their life is better than the other’s. Social media´s perfectly understand that and I wouldn’t be surprised to see one day influencers doing sponsored adds with virtual reality. I just hope our virtual image won’t take over the real life. A random « Like » sent behind a screen could never compete with real human interaction.

“The last book I read was «Life is so good » by George Dawson. It’s the autobiography of an Afro-American man who lived in Texas for 102 years and learn how to read at the age of 98.”

What do you love most about your life and why?

My 2 cats and my skateboard for sure. laughs. At this moment, I would say my freedom. Due to my difficult past, I’m happy and grateful for every simple pleasure other people might probably never notice.

What was the last book you read?

I love reading. If my law studies allowed me to have more free time, I would be a real book addict. The last book I read was «Life is so good » by George Dawson. It’s the autobiography of an Afro-American man who lived in Texas for 102 years and learn how to read at the age of 98. On a historical point of view, his testimony is very enriching. But what strikes me over all is the author’s personality. His humility and his unbreakable optimism are a wonderful message of wisdom.

Another morning reaching for my underwear
And crawling out the door
You know I’ll call a million times inside my head
And talk about the things you wanted more

Producer, songwriter and performer Lydmor hast just released her brandnew album ‘I Told You I’d Tell Them Our Story‘ and this is followed now by the new music video release of her single 五 DIM. “The song contains parts of the dialogue that also appears on the album’s opening track ‘The Mansion’. Once more you are hearing a mysterious voice: ”Where are you going in life? I’m going in every direction possible.” In this song I’m equal parts in love and belittled.” says Lydmor. The video has been directed by Danish director, writer, designer and animator Jeanette Nørgaard and is based on footage from „Fjer“. A real catchy tune paired with an awesome animation.

Serendipity by Joy Berdina

Serendipity

As the undoubted metaphor of the course of her life, this chilly Sunday morning was exactly the same. Joy is enjoying her favorite drink -espresso macchiato- in a dreamy café. Tall windows enlighten the white wooden panels on the floor in this old gallery that has been turned into an urban jungle at the heart of the city. It breathes authenticity, down to earth with a tranquil mood: exactly as Joy Berdina’s pictures do. And there they meet again, as old friends that run into each other: serendipity. Valèrie Pasker walkes in. When she beautifully smiles at the waitress, the sunlight catches her pureness, as does Joy’s eye. When Joy gets up -grabbing her business card from her purse to hand to Valerie-, she smiles for this desirable discovery.

Life is but a compilation of experiences and life lessons. Joy tries to implement each and everyone’s story in a picture. These settings that’s she creates, breathe sensuality but are also close to nature as she adores natural light and always a hint of dreaminess. Her inspiration: her longtime friend serendipity. Joy’s life has been a course of (mis)fortunate discoveries by accident. Ever since Joy Berdina was a little girl, she was busy with photography. After working in the fashion industry for a while, she decided to take the step in becoming a fulltime photographer. An option she was never aware could become a career.

In terms of planning a shoot, by experience Joy knows that the connection between photographer and model is key. Joy enjoys a clean, relaxed setting that exudes calmness, freedom and openness. Working with natural sunlight only, she doesn’t plan her shoots in detail. Joy solely works with an intended atmosphere in mind and then just goes with the wind. As this shoot was a perfect example of such: at the first attempt a buffalo blocked there car on the road and when outside, pouring rain came down. At the second attempt the weather was beautiful. The sunlight formed dreamy shadows of the trees in the sand. The sunshine gave a perfect reflection on camera. The combination of a barefoot Valerie on the undiscovered beach near Joy’s hometown, created the perfect serendipity.

Valèrie Pasker (18) was only eight years old when she was scouted as a model and since then, has done a lot of photoshoots. With a very distinctive face, exuding youth but also timelessness, she also radiates cheerfulness, curiosity and compassion. A perfect resemblance of her personality, that has brought her to her modelling career. With years ahead of her, this is only the start of Valerie’s modeling career.

Telling a Story – The world of photographer Radoslaw Pujan

All eyes on Polish photographer Radoslaw Pujan whose work seems like from another time, telling intense stories and is made for eternity.

“Born in Poland in 1978. Graduated at Poznan Polytechnique in Poland in 2002. Currently living in Belgium. I am a self-taught photographer working in analog photography of all kinds, always experimenting and trying new techniques.

More making than taking photos, I enjoy both the process of preparing a photograph, and the moment when its final shape is revealed. When composing an image all details are important, but above all, I hold the emotion that is conveyed.

While making images, I focus on the story I want to reveal, emotions of depicted person(s), details and composition – to make photography easy to read and at the same time appealing and keeping the viewer´s attention for a longer time. By showing one single frame without giving the whole context, I would like to invite the observer to create their own imagined stories.

I work mainly with medium format cameras, sporadically with large format, and recently with 35mm. Playing with different forms, and materials, experimenting, to get interesting and unique results.”

Radoslaw is also about to release his first hardcover book – more infos here.

What is the first thing you think in the morning?

If it’s not a school day and I’m not pushing snooze on my alarm 3 times before I wake up, then I think about the many ideas I have for the day that lies ahead!

What inspired you to be in front of a camera?

I was inspired to be in front of the camera already as a kid looking through magazines with my mother and being so amazed by the girls on the covers, and so I just wanted to do that.

What do you like about yourself?

Hmm, how wild I can be at times, and how sweet I can be as well. I can have a good time doing almost anything :)

How many selfies do you take in a week?

Can’t count… just kidding. If it’s a week where I’m at shoots frequently then a lot, if not, then not too many :)

“I like how wild I can be at times, and how sweet I can be as well. I can have a good time doing almost anything”

What makes you sad?

Not accomplishing what I would like to

The most important person in your life?

My mother of course

Favorite food?

Anything Italian or Thai

Favorite movie?

Bridesmaids

Favorite place?

Sayulita, Mexico for now. I´m planning on traveling a lot more in my future.

What do you wish people would stop asking you?

If my twin brother and I are identical twins. laughs. Or what I want to do as an actual career in my future. laughs. I’m in college but I’m still clueless.

Shibui

She likes to think about destiny, to let herself be carried away by the wind, trusting that everything will turn out well, without fear.
She likes to go back to the places that has always made her heart beat.
She likes to get lost in her favourite streets even knowing that there is no one left.
She likes to be told that her eyes have the energy of a girl who does not need a childhood to dream.
And what nobody knows is that she dreams about the sea, the sky and the laughs, just to feel safe.

The stories of the people behind the art: Maty Chevriere #8

With our new series “An artist´s life.” we want to share the stories of the people behind the art.

“An artist´s life.”
The stories of the people behind the art
#8 Maty Chevriere

I’m Maty, I’ am a photographer and a painter from Canary Islands based in Barcelona. I grew up surrounded by nature and volcanoes in Gran Canaria, therefore those landscapes are really present in my photos and paintings. But where I really find my inspiration nowadays is from the daily things I observe. This inspiration only comes when I’m capable of living in the present, when I live the moment that is happening in front of me. However when I get out of this “line” and I start to recreate myself in past events or how I would like to be things in the future, a kind of frustration overcomes me and I completely lose the inspiration.

“…those are the moments when the ego goes quiet and I am able to see that we are all the same, suffering from the same fears and wanting the same things in this life.”

Let me tell you an example: Have you ever stopped in order to observe when someone is getting their hair washed at the hairdresser? Or have you ever stopped in order to observe when someone is cleaning those big shop windows? Or have you ever stopped to watch a mother with her kid on the train? The mutual understanding that they have in some moments is just unique, and so pure and real!  Exactly those are the moments when the ego goes quiet and I am able to see that we are all the same, suffering from the same fears and wanting the same things in this life.

These photos where taken by my talented friend Joaquin Burgeño, a photographer & art director based in Gran Canaria. That day we went down to the south of the island on a beautiful August afternoon. The tide was low, so we placed a big white fabric on a rock, I took off my clothes in the nature and I started painting the bust of a woman while Joaquin was capturing that moment with the sun going down on the Island.

Athanasia of Ace Models dipped into sunlight. Photographed by Dino Rovolis.

Just recently a friend of mine came back from a trip to Athens and raved about its raw beauty, the hidden side streets so full of life and history. When looking at this series I can feel some of the stories my friend told and feel the Greek sun on my mind. “What would be Athens without its past?” asks photographer Dino. “The past is very much imprinted in all Greeks. The hills, the trees, the sand, the sun, the air, the sound and smell. Billions have walked these paths from the very start of the temple to it´s reconstruction. It’s amazing to be a part of history contrasted in such a modern world. Sometimes we stop and wonder, is it all real?”

An ode to Mariana

Nicolau Spadoni, a photographer & Philosophy graduate from São Paulo, Brazil photographed Mariana Bauer. In this short essay he also wrote about her, of what came out as an ode to their friendship and her being his muse.

“I knew Mariana long before I met her. Everyone called her Bauer. I would say she had a kind of aura within our social bubble. I remember this day I was at a friend’s house and he was telling me that the night before everyone had a pre-party get together in the house and Bauer had visited his room. Yes; just that she had stepped into his room was noteworthy, memorable to him. Her Instagram was perfect. Her life, her peers, her affection, all of it always seemed so far away from our reality.

But life, as it goes, invited me & her to the same party on a warm Saturday night in September 2016. When I recognized her, there in the middle of the party, I froze. Since that very first time I felt this sort of je ne sais quoi fascination for her. I very carefully approached her and told her I had heard so much about her. She laughed.

“What have your heard?”

“That everyone that gets to know you falls in love with you.”

She laughed harder and asked who had said that.

“Boys & girls.”

I was appalled by how kind she was. Not much after that we were already shooting for the first, the second, the third time… and so on. And it was during those shoots, or during the planning of those shoots, that I started to understand a lot of her wishes and desires, her fears and insecurities, and she began trusting me deeply. Now, two years and many rolls of film later, it is as if we had this private research of ours, a symbiotic dynamic through which we experiment, understand & push our boundaries.

“Immanuel Kant once said that even though judgement of beauty refers to our personal perception of the object, they nonetheless aspire to be universally true.”

Immanuel Kant once said that even though judgement of beauty refers to our personal perception of the object, they nonetheless aspire to be universally true. This means that if one says: “this rose is beautiful”, this person is not only expressing her feelings about the rose but is also urging everyone else to recognize the beauty of such rose. This is somehow sort of my visual rationale with Bauer; because my photos of her are not merely an attempt to express how deeply beautiful I find every centimeter of her and how much I love her, but also urging everyone else to recognize so as well.”

“Toujours Paris” exhibition spotlights works of French humanist photographers

Using the French Humanist movement of the 1930s as its inspiration, the wonderful Santa Monica based art gallery Peter Fetterman is excited to announce its Toujours Paris exhibition featuring a curated collection of iconic artists including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Louis Stettner, and Martine Franck, among others.

French humanist photographers produced a new vision of the world that lived between realism and poetry, creating a movement focused on the everyday human experience by capturing personal anecdotes and spontaneous moments of daily life. French humanist photography greatly impacted the cinema and literature of the immediate post -war period and it’s artistic current traveled through till the late 1960s. Even today, French humanism retains its strength and dignity in contemporary art at a time when humanism is needed more than ever. Between photo-journalism and picturesque paintings of society, humanist photography is a superb witness of personalities and customs, revealing the beauty behind the banal.

The photographs of French humanist pioneers, such as Robert Doisneau, Édouard Boubat, Brassaï, and Willy Ronis, fed the newspapers and magazines of the era and are still celebrated and emulated today. These artworks, charged with emotion, have the undeniable documentary value of authenticity and simultaneously celebrate a nostalgic aesthetic that often romanticizes the French way of life. Over the years, this duality has particularly attracted serious collectors of the style.

Today the works of these artists continue to awe audiences with endearing views into the everyday life of post-war France. These works have been exhibited internationally in nearly every major institution and continue to garner praise and provide inspiration to a modern generation of artists and collectors alike.

DIE FOR YOU

A modern love story inspired by the French New Wave of the 60’s.

« I remember every kiss and touch. All our memories I miss so much. The moments we had last summer in France were perfect, and they couldn’t have been any better. You truly gave me the happiest moments of my life. You showed me how happy I could be and the potential I had. But all good comes to end.

To be happy again, I’ll have to relive the past. Hold on to every memory for as long as they last. To look back at how I used to feel, to remember them as if they were real. I wish we could go back in time, when I was you and you were mine. »
