“A good photo can’t be perfectly replicated.” A moment with photographer Kevin Burzynski

$

We had a quick chat with currently Los Angeles based photographer Kevin Burzynski about what makes a good photo, shooting on film and the biggest challenge of being a photographer.

What moment made you fall in love with photography?

I think it was through revisiting shooting color 35mm when I was in college. Film kinda has this nostalgic draw to it at first because a lot of us grew up shooting with disposable cameras as kids- on field trips to the zoo or whatever- so going back to it later on as a film student was really cool. And I had taken a couple black and white classes so now I understood what I was doing and what kind of photos I wanted to make and what the possibilities were. It was a lot easier and faster to get the same level of creative satisfaction from a good photo than it was in making an entire short film where you’re constantly compensating and relying on other people, needing tons of equipment, time, money, etc.

What makes a good photo? And what gives an image longevity in your eyes?

Hmmmm I think a great photo makes you stop what you’re doing and transports you into its world for a minute. It should make you want to save it for later and look at it over and over. It can’t be perfectly replicated. I think the best photos have to have a certain element of luck or timing or even defects present.

What are the things you want to achieve in your life so that you don’t regret it one day?

Have a big solo art exhibition or make a great movie.

What is the biggest challenge of being a photographer?

Finding a way to get consistently paid to shoot what you actually want to- or are willing to.

And what is the best aspect of it?

The complete creative control and immediacy of it.

What, besides photography draws your interest?

I’m really into visual art in general- mostly abstract painting and collage- so I’m working on putting a show together right now actually… and I’m also a pretty big movie nerd and music nerd.

The most important thing in your life is?

Trying to find happiness and still be a good person at the same time.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

On a beach with my head in the sand.

“We are two hairstylists, coffee addicts and we have a obvious love for tattoos.” Jill and Sisi laughing out loud. “We have met each other while we were both teachers at a hairdresser academy in Amsterdam. 2 years ago we opened our own shop in the west side of Amsterdam, where we are specialized in bleaching and colouring the hair. Since we opened the shop we are pretty much inseparable. Feel free to drop by!” Sure – we will! Photographed by Theodor Versteegen.

Diesel´s new campaign is a statement against trolling culture

Social media is a huge part of a lot (especially young) peoples lives and can have – of course – a positive impact. It allows to build friendships, keep in touch with family and friends, and express themselves and their opinions in different ways. But it also brings with it constant pressure especially to compare themselves with others, it creates unrealistic expectations about life and it’s highly addictive as social media activates your brain’s reward center. And unfortunately it opens the door to bullying, hate, and harassment which can have a big impact on mental health.

Cult brand Diesel has adressed this important topic into their newest collection “Ha̶u̶te Couture” to expose the hate with irony and irreverence to reduce the power to cause harm. “We have all been victims of negativity and criticism on social media. Whatever you do online, there is always somebody ready to criticize. And when hit by unjustified hate, most of us take a step back. But hiding and feeling bad about is not going to help anyone. Where to start if not from what we have experienced directly? We took some of the hate Diesel received as a brand, like “Diesel is Dead” and “Diesel is not cool anymore” showing them with pride and turning them into unique items. Then, because no one gets more hate than the celebrities and names we follow on social media, we are kicking this off with a group of polarizing global personalities including Nicki Minaj, Gucci Mane, Bella Thorne, Bria Vinaite, Tommy Dorfman, Miles Heizer, Yovanna Ventura, Barbie Ferreira, Yoo Ah-In and Jonathan Bellini to help deliver an important message: “The more hate you wear the less you care.” The more you expose the hate you get treating it with irony and irreverence, the less power it has to cause harm. They chose the very worst of the comments they have ever received, and we have designed exclusive Haute Couture items for each of them. Nicki Minaj was dubbed “The Bad Guy.” Gucci Mane was told “Fuck You, Imposter.” Bella Thorne was named a “Slut.” And, Tommy Dorfman was called “Faggot.”

All these comments are now limited-edition items in their Ha̶u̶te Couture collection, available in selected Diesel stores and on diesel.com. Diesel will be making a donation in support of anti-bullying and cyberbullying programs of the OTB foundation.

“This project was in the works since July 2018” explains us photographer Zakariya Ismail about his new series Life Imitates Art. starring Femme Dusoir. “The motivation from this project came from Vogue’s New Renaissance exhibit; in which the theme was Neo-Renaissance. This editorial is called “Life Imitates Art” and is a reinventing of “A Casting From Life” (1887) by Edouard Joseph Dantan; in which a life caster and his assistant remove a plaster mold from the leg of a young model in Dantan’s painting.” Sculptor is Raj Shahani and sculptures by Spanish sculptor and figurative artist Miguel Del-Rey whose work celebrates the human condition by depicting the body and its infinite expressive ability. I thought I knew what freedom was

I thought I knew what freedom was, until I saw the core of it
-Ruby Chu

I thought I knew what freedom was, until I saw the core of it

When I was 15,
I had my first taste of freedom
as I concert-toured and sang my way through Australia that summer.
My first break from a toxic environment that I’d been stuck in for the longest time.
Even though it was just a short-lived summer,
it was the happiest time of my life, for a very long time.

When I was 17,
I moved to the US on my own.
I’ve finally fulfilled my long-waited escape, a safe hideaway far away.
It was a new chapter, a liberation. I felt freed.

When I was 21,
I glared at the digits of my first pay cheque from my first real job.
That tangible vision of sustainable financial independency was delicious.
My sense of freedom expanded into a whole new scope.

When I was 26,
I quitted my job and flew to Bueno Aires with a one-way ticket and a backpack,
Few months down the line,
I found myself sitting in a 6-hour bus ride en route to the Andes,
I stared at the gleaming Chilean Pacific coast
as I was heading to a place I learnt about just a day ago.
I found myself smiling to my heart uncompromisingly,
just because.

It was at that moment,
I realized it was the first time in my life I’ve experienced true freedom.
It was such a shocking, bittersweet but delightful revelation.
I supposed it was a by-product of discovering and testing the essence of following your heart,
day after day, as I backpacked through South America.

And I was never the same again.
Everything changed when I found this new and powerful strength.
Something I never realized I lacked inside of me.

I thought I knew what freedom were before.
I thought I’ve had it and even felt it physically before.
But then I guess sometimes trivial milestones in life could be disgusted as true freedom,
even though they were just one of those fleeting things.

True freedom is one of those things that
you can only earn on your own terms and pace,
like knowledge, muscles, or love.
It is a power that only you can find for yourself.
Once you’ve found it, no one can ever take it away from you.

“I went for a holiday to Thailand. And I realized how much was happening the last year.” explains Piyathath Patiparnprasert. “I went out on an adventure to fulfill my dream in Melbourne. And so did Nin Duijkers, the model. We both met after a long time and on that day the weather was so good. We had a small talk in front of the location and after entering inside we saw that everything was decorated with colours and neon lights. The location is a hidden gem; it is surrounded by a restaurant, vintage store and a nail salon. And then we created more memories to remember…” Styling was done by Hattaya Sae-ngow and the clothes used are by W.A.S.H.I.T, the shoes by Darlin Jewerly. A summer romance

“This is  a series  of images I took documenting a brief two week summer romance I had while travelling in France this Summer. Different to my usual photographic art practice, I shot this on a disposable camera and feel that the analogue format and the intimacy and softness of the work are well suited for radiating the feelings.

I met him during my travels this summer in France. I was staying in a tiny village outside of Paris and he was living at the house I stayed at. We explored Monet’s garden together and something began to kindle. Back at the house he told me to put a record on and asked me to dance. It felt like old-fashioned romance and fireworks. We ended up spending the next two weeks together – travelling down to the south of France and onto Spain. I took these on our last morning together in our little hotel room in a village on the coast of Spain. Wanting to document the brief, brilliant collision of two souls that we had experienced.”

A moment with Polish beauty Zuzanna of M4models photographed by Gadi Sahar.

What moment made you fall in love with modeling?

I was in New York, when I realised that everything is within reach, nothing is imposssible when you work hard and really believe in yourself. I happen to be a small city girl and because of modeling I got a chance to travel the world, meet amazing people and gain confidence. I’m very thankful to my mother agency – Koya Mgmt for this opportunity. I think I love modeling because it helped me to transform from a shy girl to a powerful young woman.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Poland in a city called Leszno where I was also a student of a bilingual school.

How much time do you spend with your friends and family?

I think it’s just never enough. Sometimes I wish I had more time to stay around the closest people. When I’m away I  talk to my parents for hours on skype! I also send my grandparents postcards from the places I go, I know it makes them smile.

What are the little things that make you happy?

I love having my morning coffee with my mom at my parents house, when we don’t need to rush, just stay in pj’s and chat for a while. What else… So probably working out makes me happy aswell, because I know that step by step I’m becoming better, getting closer to accomplish my goals, and it brings me strength and discipline.

“I think I love modeling because it helped me to transform from a shy girl to a powerful young woman.”

And what makes you sad?

All the hate on social media, people can be so cruel to each other, I just don’t get it.

Last movie you watched

One of the last movies I watched is „ The shape of water”;  a very inspiring one.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I am interested in law and politics and in the future I might be able somehow to connect those interests. But at the moment I really want to focus on modeling. One of my biggest dreams is to be on a cover of British Vogue, so hopefully you will see me there! :)

Viktoriya on the horse farm

The horse´s warm coat gently clings to her,
an invisible bond of respect and trust
between two beings.

“I had been trying to setup an editorial shoot for a while. It was the middle of summer in France and most of the models had gone home or were on holiday. The French football team was about to win the World Cup.” recalls photographer Alex Jonas.

“Needless to say that getting a team together at that time was a challenge. Eventually the planets lined up and everything fell into place. The location, the style, the props and the team. A friend of mine has a farm outside of Paris where horses roam free in the fields. Last time I was there I thought it would be great to throw a model in there.” Viktoriya Bogoslavceva liked this idea as well and together with Stylist Marie Revelut, Make up artist Gaelle Bonnot, Art director Laurence Boukobza and Assistant Enora Allehaux Villan they drove there, to Ferme de Mesenguy, in a vintage Range Rover, had lunch at the farm and cruised in the fields until sunset, playing with the car and the horses. “The young ones are really curious and friendly. They will surround you in a second, sniff you up and whisper in your ear asking for love and food!”

A summer dream with Anna

The way she looks at me,
like no one else.
and when she looks away,
I can still see myself in her eyes.

“Usually, when I find ideas for my next shootings, I write them down in my notebook. This time I just tried to take some photos with a handmade “filter” on my lens.” explains photographer Victor Sapozhnikov on his newest set. “And I love that interesting soft effect it created. Anna is one of my favorite models, and we made a beautiful summer photo series. I decided to shoot in one of my favourite parks in Moscow – Kolomenskoye Park. Not only because of the nature; I just wanted to have nothing excess in the frame. In my opinion, the location, the dreamy effect, the model, her facial expressions and natural beauty – everything turned out organically. We had a good time and made a lot of beautiful photos.”

Millions of small windows

Millions of stories
and one one of them
hers.

On a sunny day photographer Villanuevo captured model Georgia Sumner who is with Agency State Mgmt, at her penthouse, that comes with a stunning view over midtown New York. Georgia loves sunsets, exploring beautiful places through traveling, fitness, film and of course her cute fur child featured in the story, Harrison Ford. “We wanted her styling to be simple and soft to contrast the backdrop of the city.” he explains. Our eyes drift across the megalopolis, and again and again get stuck at the beautiful girl.

Soulful tracks by female artists #5

Every month, Donna Arendse of Lekker Collective and Majestic Casual curates a playlist of soulful tracks by – or featuring – female artists.

Ego Ella MayTable For One

Please activate JavaScript to view this video.
Video-Link: https://youtu.be/hrEP8pHztik

I’m late to the table when it comes to Ego Ella May, to be completely honest. Some retrospective digging on my part unearthed that the IAMNOBODI collaborator has been on a lengthly hiatus (for internet times) of three years. She’s returned with renewed vigour on “Table for One” and its accompanying video – a narrative which represents beautiful insight for every woman.

The track takes an old soul sensibility, marries it to “current” aesthetics, bottles it all up in a message of healing, growth and self-love and adds divine instrumentation and a slightly anti-pop song structure to really stand out. My favourite find of the month, hands-down.

P.S. if you like this track, you just might enjoy Hiatus Kaiyote’s “Breathing Underwater

Charlotte Dos Santos – Cleo

Please activate JavaScript to view this video.
Video-Link: https://youtu.be/8juaQjyJFtc

Norwegian songstress Charlotte Dos Santos is – dare I say – an obvious, effortless addition for this playlist. An evident old-soul with her jazz influenced style and narrative songwriting, the (now) Berlin-based Fresh Selects label pick is gaining steady attention as she pushes the boundaries of jazz and soul with her unique sound. Enjoy this live performance of  Fredfades produced track “Cleo“.

Alex IsleyOn II U.

This track by LA-based artist Alex Isley has been on my “must-playlist-and/or-write-about” list since its release almost a year ago. Following in the footsteps of an RnB legacy led by her uncles and father (who collectively make up the Isley Brothers ), the multitalented artist wrote and produced “On II U.”, which comes from her latest offering The Beauty Of Everything Pt. 1.

Guitar riffs form the foundation of the track while subtle, understated instrumentation, synth work by Grammy award winner Terrace Martin and dreamy vocal play bring the Bryson Tiller and Kendrick Lamar collaborator to your attention, almost without you noticing.

p.s. Contagious by Isley Brothers is still my jam.

Milan Ring
 – Drifting

Australian producer & singer-songwriter Milan Ring has also come out of a somewhat lengthly hiatus, emerging with a reflreshing slew of new singles this year. “Drifting” is the latest, slightly reminiscent of SZA, with Ring ellaborating on the themes – “The frustration one can have with someone who is unable to move forward, but the patience and love one must have in order for them to grow.”

The multi-instrumentalist has found herself in the studio with SZA, LL Cool J, BJ The Chicago Kid and more, co-wrote D.R.A.M’s record ‘I’ll Be Back Again’ with The Social Experiment Crew (Chance The Rapper’s band) in L.A. I can imagine we’ll be seeing and hearing alot more from the chanteuse over the next few years.

Corinne Bailey Rae – Que Sera Sera

Please activate JavaScript to view this video.

An exquisite take on the 1956 Doris Day classic “Whatever Will Be Will Be (Que Sera Sera)”, “Que Sera Sera” was recorded live for Corinne’s The Love EP back in 2011. A song that every little girl came into contact with when they are young – this cover is 13 minutes long and I guarantee you won’t even notice the time passing.

“The city continues to be beautiful and crazy as existence, its dress beautiful and crazy as the memory. Never sleep early to dream of anything. The sky of Paris, it has its own secret said Edith, it is reflected in the eyes of lovers.”

Andrea N. Mejía  took the pictures of model Sophie with her Minolta SR T 102 and a Kodak Portra film iso 400 in her apartment in Paris, a little before the sun goes down, and colored a bit with led lights. The little neighbour boy nosily sneaks behind the door to watch them when they arrive. And when the apartment door closes all the rest of the world is left outside and they get into their flow of photographing.
