Quiet Place

We are super happy to show the latest work of Munich based photographers duo Laukart, Sasha & Anastasia, who are the wonderful cover photographers of our current C-Heads print issue ” Remember those golden days“.

This time they captured in their sensual style one day in a hotel, dreaming together with model Whitney Joeston, who is with Amaze models agency, and enjoying all the small things – a glass of champaigne at the fireplace, the stunning view to the mountains from the terrace. “Imagine for a moment: a beautiful hotel in the Alps, silent and empty, bored by the quarantine. What would you do there if noone sees you? Follow the story and see what a stunning concierge Whitney would do – seen by noone but the cameras.”

Travel back to the younger days

“I used to be one of those guys roaming around in Europe only caring about good waves, nice people, sweet inspirational talks and a cold beer.” tells us photographer Phil Wildschuetz. “I loved that time, that’s for sure. Somehow I made my way back to Germany to follow a path I somehow felt comfortable with but never really fitted in. Studying Business was, at least for that moment, the easiest way to fit into this strange system we call society. During my studies I continued traveling in my semester breaks to distract myself from not fitting in. The inspiration of that series was to travel back in time to those days. Those carefree days where you fit in just for being you.” he continues about his series starring Lea June Giese. “So we met to practice skating, listening to some good music, laughing and talking about the universe, just to have one carefree day.” The images express exactly what Phil told us in words. No glossy pictures, but sharing those good and carefree moments with us. And reminding us of our own memories we want to travel back to.

Alois – When The Heat Is On And The Vibe Is Right

Interview with Martin Schenker.

by O.D.M.
photography by Joan Seiler

The Swiss electro-pop quintet known as Alois recently released a record called Azul. It’s a collection of sweltering, moist tunes with something of a Balearic streak. It’s the type of music that sounds like it was recorded with deep-summer abandon in mind, which it probably was. And it definitely hit that sweet spot between analogue instrumentation and synths and drum-machines just right. The production is clubby and tight, but everything still swings nicely. If you’re in deep need of a sonic vacation of sorts, this record will take you there!

To find out more about the project we contacted vocalist Martin Schenker, see what he had to say below. Azul is available via Red Brick Chapel Records. Shoot over to Bandcamp if you want to get this one on a gorgeous slice of vinyl.

Your new material is very clubby, was this intended?

The idea for a dance-floor oriented record came from our experiences playing live, especially this energetic exchange with the audience. So with this one, we decided to create a record that will create this space for people so that they can let go and dance more at our gigs.

From afar, it seems like there is a lot happening in Switzerland, especially when it comes to electronica-based pop, what’s driving this new scene?

In recent years, everything started to feel more like a proper scene. There are way more collaborations happening between artists, more labels, too. Also, musician-led collectives like our label Red Brick Chapel changed the way that music is being released. Red Brick is literally run by musicians and for musicians!  The roster is full of adventurous artists from all over Switzerland.

“We love to play long sets and improvise around our songs.”

What is the clubbing scene like?

Zurich definitely has a good scene! The programming at Zukunft covers everything from techno through house and more of what is considered left-field music. I think Matias Aguayo is going to play there real soon.

What can we expect at an Alois gig?

Energy! Lots of synths and bongos and groovy jams that you can dance to. We love to play long sets and improvise around our songs. Luzius, who plays keys with us, is a real synth wizard! He always surprises us with the type of gear that he brings to our shows. When the heat is on and the vibe is good, our shows turn into these never-ending jams. Recently, we recorded a live version of Light the Fire, you can find it easily on youtube. I think that this video accurately captures the spirit of how we perform our music live.

“A smile is the best makeup a girl could wear”.

“Five years ago, I visited Sydney to do a variety of model test shoots and during my location scouting, I discovered the breathtaking, scenic Bronte Baths.” tells us Jeffrey Chan about his newest C-Heads Exclusive starring muse Sofia Reynal of Chadwick Models. Makeup and hair done by Steph Lai of Reload Agency. “It’s a popular swimming, sunbathing and photo shoot location, and I was determined to do a shoot there. Things didn’t work out then, but in 2020 (pre COVID-19 lockdown) I was able to finally put it all together during my last trip. I’d heard that Sofia was in-town from Argentina via NYC, and I knew her vibe, look and personality would be perfect for the shoot. Her smile and candidness added a lot of charm to the day.” So true!

If you’ve got the summertime blues, Zanski is here to dispel them.

Not only is his groovy new EP Upon Frigid Water is a rather danceable affair, it taps into some of the most human themes; purpose, life as a journey, and facing down your demons. Its appealing, but also gratifying. And musically speaking, the Toronto-based producer is onto something. No doubt, there are token elements of modern pop and electronic music, but beneath lies the influence of timeless genres like R&B, soul, and rock. The best part? It’s streaming everywhere for your enjoyment today.

“I want to cultivate a sense of understanding around people who are looking for answers and let them know that they are not alone in the journey. I want people to form their own interpretations and conclusions, and feel as though they have gained something real from it.”

Get to know Tel Aviv based young actress Noa in our quick “Would you rather… ” interview. Photographed by Yoad Shejtman.

Have a Daiquiri or Pina Colada?

A Daiquiri please, thank you. (laughs) When you come visit me at my local bar I would have whiskey, Jack Daniels.

Hike or bike?

I live in Tel Aviv – an amazing beach city that is flat. Bicycle is by far the best way to move around the city and I love it!

Watch TV or read a book?

Reading books is one of my favourite hobbies. I like Haruki Murakami especially and I recently read “Norwegian Wood” which is an exceptional book. To be honest, I don’t even own a TV which makes this question easy!

Use Facebook or Twitter?

I’m using both, but I do prefer Facebook. I think it’s better in connecting people and communities.

Be in jail for a year or lose a year of your life?

If anyway I won’t be living my regular life for a year, I prefer to be in jail – at least I’ll get to read some books (laughs)

Win the lottery or find your perfect job?

Of course finding my perfect job! I’m an actress, I love doing that. Every moment I’m acting brings me joy. I want to do something great with my time and that’s what my job is all about for me.

Drink coffee or tea?

I can’t start my morning without a cup of coffee :)

Stay in a hotel or an Airbnb home?

When I’m staying at an Airbnb, the experience feels more authentic than a hotel room. I like it better.

Visit Europe or Canada?

I visited many cities in Europe! I especially liked London, Munich and Edinburgh.
I would love to visit Canada too, one day I will.

“Back to the roots” A series by Charlotte Hubert

As for many people, also for Charlotte Hubert Corona has brought about a change in life. With her series about her closest friends and family, she lets us have a share in pure feelings and real moments of lifelong friends and returning to her hometown.

“At the end of February I moved back to my hometown after having lived in Berlin for five and a half years. I left when I was 18 years old. Just before Corona arrived in Holland, I decided to move back for a while. My plan was to actually leave again after 3 months and go to Australia, but now I am stuck in my hometown.

During this time of Corona I realized that for me it is really important to take a step back and for to literally go back to my roots, to spend time with my beloved ones, family and friends. I decided to take photos of my oldest friend, Sophie and my other friends and family who are from my hometown. I captured them in the nature and I wanted to make it as pure as possible, literally back to the roots where I and they come from.” she explains.

She adds a few more words to Sophie:

“Sophie and I have known each for 22 years already and we are the same age, 24, and we are in the progress of becoming ‘adults’. I made this series pure out of my feelings, which is what I often do when it comes to photographing. We spend a nice afternoon together taking those images. When I look back on the photos, I can read my feelings and personality out of it, as well as the ones from my model. What I see when I look at the photos is, is a young gorgeous woman who is very vulnerable. Like a flower that wants to open up, but is not there yet. The destination of her life is unknown. But she loves life and is ambitious. She is a dreamer.”

All photos are taken in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

Hey Sayma!

Exclusive Premiere: Ryan Murgatroyd feat. Sobantwana “Wooma”

We are incredibly thrilled to premiere stellar South African artists Ryan Murgatroyd and Sobantwana and the release of their brand new Wooma EP, which is coming out on July 10. The hypnotizing sound picks you up in order to take you away from your daily routine – and we immediately drift along in a music of the spheres.

All things considered, it’s been a pretty incredible twelve months for Ryan Murgatroyd and the Swoon Recordings crew. Established in June 2019 as an outlet to champion South African talent and push the boundaries of traditional club music with its deep and soulful sonic leanings, Swoon has since forged itself a remarkable reputation as one of the most exciting, forward-thinking labels on the electronic music circuit.

“For me as both an artist and a woman in this time I feel it’s always important to stay true to who you are. Wooma to me was a song of letting go of all the noise around me and choosing to follow my spirit. I can only hope it moves you in the same way.” Sobantwana explains.

And Ryan tells: “It’s taken 3 years across 3 continents to complete this record. It has such a special place in my heart, because it encompasses this sound that I think personifies Swoon; a touch African, cinematic, dreamy and emotive, but unmistakably uplifting. I think we did 10 versions of the riff before we settled on this, so I’m really excited to see it finally leave the lab and head out into the world”.

‘Wooma’ EP (including remix from Zaloz) will be released on July 10, 2020 via Swoon Recordings.

Premiere: Avgust Reign “6ix”

We’re always curious on new artists. And Los Angeles based singer and songwriter Avgust Reign definitely caught our attention. Enjoy this fresh breeze oft soft vocals and sonorous sounds.

Her new single exploring the feeling of euphoria when you’re in love with someone and still learning/growing with each other. It’s the butterflies in your stomach that feel so amazing but also so crushing. Avgust wanted to describe this as beautifully as possible without saying anything literally. The entire song has a very atmospheric feel that we think gives it a lightness while still having a heavy feel lyrically; like a quiet storm.

“As a woman, I feel like we’re often told to shy away from any form of lust or sensuality. Personally I’ve always been very inwardly sensual but often shy away from showing it to others. This inspired me to make a song that described the feeling of lust and heightened emotions when you’re involved with someone. But in a way that is elusive and poetically suggestive. I want the listeners’ mind to run wild trying to figure out what means what, the same way your mind runs all over the place when you’re loving someone”.

“A suburb often forgotten and overlooked, Footscray to me is the heart of Melbourne. A melting pot of cultures, expression and vibrancy that has shaped me as an artist.” explains Harrison Moss to us.

“I felt as though I had to return after a period of isolation and capture a suburb still waking up after quarantine, using the beautiful afternoon glow as my guide, I focused on the neglected store fronts, unoccupied environments, while meeting up with locals from the area who to me are an essence of the vibrant and unique location.” Featuring Ciang and Leanne.

“After lockdown” is the second part of a series starring Raquel photographed by Yanis Dupleix.

“I did a shooting with Raquel two days before the French lockdown. When the lockdown restrictions have been lifted, we were able to continue the series we had in mind.” Coincidentally, it was Fête de la Musique in Paris where musical events are held in halls, bars, parks, gardens and even in some big Metro stations. And finally the streets of Paris were alive again.

Sizzy Rocket explores softer side on new single “Rollerskating”

“Rollerskating, it’s only going ’round in circles”

We’ve all had that feeling before – stuck in a rut, not knowing how to take the rollerskates off. Indie pop’s favorite bad girl Sizzy Rocket comes to terms with that on her new single “Rollerskating”. It’s a refreshing change of pace for the singer-songwriter, a mellower side she hasn’t shown much of since she emerged in the mid-2010s. It’s certainly a feeler, but also a windows-down kind of tune. So give it a spin, maybe take a moment to reflect, but remember the rink door is always right around the corner.

Words by Andy Gorel
Photos by Dalton

It’s been a while since we last caught up for C-Heads. You released an album last year, GRRRL. How has that album changed things for you?

Making GRRRL was such a process of self-discovery. That whole era, from writing the record to booking the tour to putting the show together to learning how to sell and package merch, it all really taught me about my own resilience. I pride myself on it now. I felt confident and re-energized after creating that record, so much so that we flew to NYC for the punk sessions, wrote and recorded the new record, and booked a second tour all within 3 months immediately after the release. I felt my own power for the first time.

You’re currently in the midst of releasing new music, the first two singles this year, “THAT BITCH” and “Smells Like Sex,” were a bit heavier than “Rollerskating.” Have you been sitting on these singles for a while?

I wrote the new album last fall over the course of eight days, in two separate chunks — I did a four day stint in Downtown LA and then another four days in Laurel Canyon. I didn’t expect to sit on these songs for, like, all of 2020, as that’s not really my style… but you have to go with the flow of life, I guess.

What sets the new music apart from GRRRL?

GRRRL was a feather, lightly tickling your nose and the new record is a bitch slap.

Your new single, “Rollerskating,” is pretty emotional. Where’d the inspiration for it come from?

I swear that song was written in about 15 minutes. Here’s the thing — I had one true love in my early 20s when I lived in New York and my writing partner, Eric Leva, knows that story pretty well. I believe that your first true love sets the tone for every other kind of love you’ll ever have. It’s deep. I assume we were talking about it that day when Eric and I were writing in the loft, but it’s hard to explain because it feels like we blinked and the whole thing was recorded already! I guess that’s how the best songs happen. You can feel them deeply with no explanation needed.

“I believe that your first true love sets the tone for every other kind of love you’ll ever have.”

You’ve been able to continue having a high output while being an independent artist over the past few years. How do you do it?

How do I do it? I just do it. The DOING is key. I don’t know, maybe it comes from no one ever being motivated enough to do anything for me early in my career so I had to learn to do it on my own. And I LOVE this shit. Like, I love calculating merch prices, keeping the books, and studying analytics. Why can’t I do it all?

But here’s my process: If I need something done, I break it down into a series of questions and then write down the answers. It’s pretty simple. For example, WHAT do I want? I want to make vinyl. HOW do I make vinyl? By pressing my album on vinyl. WHAT do I need to do that? Someone who knows how to press vinyl. Start slowly. The internet is also a very powerful tool. You can learn to do anything on your own and it’s kind of fun!

You also have become a champion for zine culture among your fans. What’s it been like being able to connect with people on a level beyond music and keep a community together in that way?

I’m so grateful that my zines are connecting with other grrrls. It’s so validating. That kind of confidence is so important when you’re young and just discovering your creativity. I first discovered riot grrrl and zine culture when I was seventeen and it really helped me to develop my style and voice, so being able to see that come full circle is beyond fulfilling. I actually have a collaborative zine coming out with a fan’s zine! It’s going to be so sentimental and badass!

London based photographer Jase Holzer shares a special series with us. While lockdown he had everything we dream of: A cat. The perfect and down-to-earth model. Natural, authentic and yes … kind of sexy… of course. (laughing) And finally our name makes sense: cat heads.

“This is my cat. His name is Oswald C. Cobblepaws, but he goes by many a name. The claw in the dark. The silver prince. The grey bear, or occasionally just beans. This is his lockdown story, usually used to space and time, having to spend 3 months locked down at home by a bored photographer with a roll of film.”

Let´s play tennis!

“I am very drawn to the tennis aesthetic, particularly the sporty style from the 80’s/90’s – adding to that I play tennis myself and the quarantine made me miss the tennis court, so it was natural to shoot at the court,” Jonathan Benbaruk tells us about his newest work starring Darianka S & Julia Myles of Next LA. The Los Angeles based photographer has a good eye for bold, colourful and artistic pictures and to notice details immediately. “The weather was perfect for a tennis game – that day it was Julia vs Darianka.” We keep our fingers crossed for a draw. And btw… we are also so happy to have him in our new print issue with a series starring Brooke True.
