A Tuesday like Many Others

Another Tuesday, another day alive in a redefined world.

It’s one pm and my paper thin curtains hangs still, a testimony to the warm windless weather outside. Golden rays like warm honey spill through my sheer white drapes and to my wooden floor as dusts like tiny flakes floats along the runway paved by the light shinning by.

My plant, Cher, sits on the floor beside my window, barely surviving. The beautiful leaves which once stood green and yellow now slowly brown and crumble right before my eyes. It was a housewarming gift by someone I knew a long time ago. Now it plays a stranger in my own home. Uncared and unchecked for, dying in a corner, taking up space of another.

The television is on but there’s no one sitting on the couch. The stories continue to play but there’s no one to listen and understand. It is a tactic you know, to fill up the mind numbing silence enveloping the apartment on a lonely weekday afternoon.

It’s as lazy a day as it can get.

I walk barefoot, wearing just a blue shirt belonging to a lover from ages ago. It’s still too big for me as it sneakily slips past my shoulders every five minutes or so. His smell is no longer there, rather replaced by those of limes and something acidic.

My brown hair in tangles, falls in looses curls past my bare shoulders. I haven’t showered today. Big deal? It’s been close to sixty days and there haven’t been many visitors. Well, except for the girl from the apartment below with the cherry mask for our occasional wine and dine sessions. Funny girl! Always stocked with little anecdotes and silly innuendos. Every so often she bakes her famous plum cakes and other times some warm chocolate chip cookies. She gets playfully nervous around me, I sometimes wonder why?

Working from home has been a treat so far, though I do miss bars and weekend trips to the trampoline park. Client meetings from bed and a glass or two of rosés during routine Skype calls has been a thing I’ve been following diligently since the beginning of lockdown. Why bother going out to offices at all when I can earn from the comforts of my one bedroom apartment?

The meeting for today is over. It was something about spreadsheets, yada, yada, budget, yada, yada, yada. I’d rather read the minutes later today. Why listen to someone talk when I can instead be caught up in gleeful daydreams?

Now, it’s time to eat and therefore, place across the table my lunch in pretty bowls and sparkling glasses. Maybe some Bach, pull down the windows, dim the lights and binge some good old fashioned episodes of Law and Order.

You ask why the elegant charade? Well, it’s part of something I read called self love. You see, I live alone and like doing what my heart desires without justifying my actions to an apparent authority. So, I whip up some cream and fresh berries, a chicken sandwich or two and lastly a glass of soda water to wash it all down. It’s a great lunch you know, fun and still containing the necessary proteins.

I scroll through Instagram and watch the same news uploaded in different graphics and colours which somehow motivates me to sign enough petitions and make the world just a tad bit better. Sometimes, I find a new trend picking up space or a post or a million of lip syncs which do not make sense. Still, they make me stick through for hours on end, so really who am I to judge?

It has started to get a little chilly. I look out the window and the sun has dipped way beyond the horizon, leaving a royal purple blanket across the sky in its place. Voices rise up in the air as evening walkers slowly make way filling the streets and nearby- till then deserted- parks.

Clad in colourful masks and gloves, they are out there being “one with nature” while I stay inside wrapped in a thin jacket, my bare feet lazily tracing circles over the floor.

I sit by the balcony and call my mom. We talk about my health, my job, my needs, my responsibilities and of course the epidemic surrounding us. Ten minutes and then a static noise, signifying the end of a long drawn call. I love her but the small talks are turning a little monotonous now. As if life isn’t droning enough.

I linger around, adding a few strokes here and there to my unfinished canvas resting in the middle of my living room. It was a project I started a few weeks ago and I don’t why, but I try to delay its end as much as possible. It is not procrastination I know, but maybe the impending thought of another end without the start of something new to fill its void.

I play a few rounds of Mario Kart, open my refrigerator a thousand times and occasionally pause the music playing to answers some emails and work calls and without knowing its closer to eleven pm now. A pre heated meal, an episode of ‘how I met your mother’ and then the sweet, sweet call of my cosy spring mattress. A few more hours of dreams and then off to the start of a semi new day tomorrow.

Sometimes you effortlessly stumble upon some great new sound that uplifts you and puts you in a good mood.

Studying graphic design and starting off by posting songs on Soundcloud, producer and songwriter Salem Khazali’s new track makes us feel careless.

Khazali’s minimal and warping summer track is a departure from his bedroom chill-pop. ‘Writing this helped me move on from a bad mind-space whilst holding onto my feelings’, says Khazali on his third release You’ll Be the One, which drops on our favourite Parisian label Kitsuné Musique. Perfect sound to start your weekend off right.

“In March, my girlfriend Maria Camila and I went on vacation to San Andres Island and checked into an incredible beautiful hotel to enjoy and spend precious time together.” tells us Deivi García about his new C-Heads Exclusive. San Andres is a petite island that belongs to Colombia, although geographically it’s closer to Nicaragua and Jamaica. “The last day of our stay, we drank two bottles of delicate wine, turned up the french music and photographed some film rolls.” Thanks for sharing the joy!

“Ibiza Feeling”– A 35mm film series by Vera Linnik

“Ibiza Feeling” is a 35mm film series about my sweet memories in September 2018. That time I was 22, just fell in love and the whole world was a big adventure to me. My boyfriend, I and our mutual friend took a spontaneous trip to Ibiza, and it was all about sleepless nights, moments of joy and electrifying parties.

The first day, after a night flight, we woke up and we went out to explore the old town and nearest beach. I was so amazed by all the delicate pastel colors, the dreamy morning light, and the lightness of being, that we decided to take a car, hit the road, and discover all the fairy-like spots of this island.

Of course, our love didn’t last… but who cares, as long as I have all this amazing memories in my heart?

At this point I totally feel the words by S.Maugham in the “The Fall of Edward Bernard” story: “Look at it well, Mr Hunter, for what you see now you will never see again, since the moment is transitory, but it will be an imperishable memory in your heart. You touch eternity.”

Photography and interview by Christopher Brown

MANGOTALE is your first full-length album, how long have you been working on this project and how does it feel to finally release it?

I feel amazing about being able to finally show the world the project I’ve dreamed about! But also I’m still continuously evolving the music and art and am still sculpting it into a bigger deluxe version. It’s been out for a month, so I’ve had some time to step back and appreciate it. “HALO HALO” and “tokyo tea” both started in 2016. I began “HALO HALO” with Hollis one day after making Otter Pop with her and “tokyo tea” was a sketch I did with Spacegirl Gemmy shortly after we made “Burnt Rice.”

You work with exclusively female vocalists on this album, how do you go about choosing collaborators?

I wholeheartedly believe that people who have culturally intersectional experiences have the best and most important stories to tell. Masculinity can easily get in the way of creating wonderful art. We’ve built it upon ourselves to dampen and compartmentalize our emotions – men do this more often than not. Maybe it comes out when we’re alone. But when “bros” hang out together there’s a collective energy that I appreciate but don’t really find my art needing to express.

It’s so audiovisual much like all of your work – where did you come up with the concept for Mango Island? And who’s your favorite character?

Inside each of us – and by us, I mean the giant neural networks that make up our wrinkly brains – there lives a world that’s buried deep inside where everything seems perfect. If my head was an island, it would be Mango Island with its own music and people and lifestyles and art.

“The biggest part of that is I love making music that my Mom would probably enjoy.”

You released this project during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – what are some of the cultural influences embedded in the album?

The biggest part of that is I love making music that my Mom would probably enjoy. Most of the songs on the project have bits of the cultural influence I adopted from my parents growing up. It’s kinda obvious in some parts, especially “HALO HALO” and “MANGO LOVE.”

What do you hope listeners will take away from MANGOTALE?

Everyone who listened to the album has told me they’ve replayed it a bunch of times. There’s so many things and steps to what I want listeners to get out of the project, but the most important out of all that is – is it good? Do you like it? Does it slap? There’s more stuff I don’t want to give away yet so I’ll be happy to finish answering this question in the upcoming months!!

You produced this album almost entirely on your laptop – for your next project, do you plan to use any other hardware or instruments?

Love my laptop. I really use anything and everything. Part of the modus operandi behind my creative workflow is just to make use of my environment as much as I can and not let anything go to waste. I love how chefs find utility for all the ingredients and tools they have in their kitchen, and I try to work the same way. I was borrowing a guitar and a bass guitar for a bit but I had to return it last week! I still have my trusty Yamaha keyboard and midi controllers though.

“I think it’s cool to give presence to yourself outside of the internet.”

How have you been staying creative and productive in quarantine?

Literally finishing up the album and nothing else, (laughs). I try to have as much fun with the process nowadays. Being that I do this for a living too, it’s important to create and maintain a mental association that it’s still fun as heck.

Are you learning a lot about yourself during this time? Things maybe you never would have expected.

Yes, I’ve been spending so much time being introspective. When it takes 20 minutes for a song to render, you just gotta sit and stare at the wall for a bit and contemplate. When you learn a new instrument or figure out a new program, you have to unpack your brain’s learning patterns and stitch it back together. Sometimes the experience of that is thoughtfully existential. Sometimes it’s meditative. Sometimes I’m thinking about the best case scenario of all the cool things in the future.

What does the rest of 2020 look like for you?

I don’t know. So many things I want to know but I’ve been shifting the goal posts a lot and spending less time on social media. 2020 is a year of uncertainty and confusion. I think it’s cool to give presence to yourself outside of the internet. I’ve been trying to relax more and just take in things around me.

Describe your style in 10 words or less.

“My passion in music gave me shelter and a place where I can share my deepest thoughts and at the same time feel understood and listened to. Music is the purest way to deal with myself in situations of uncertainty.”

The Berlin based Arab- German singer and songwriter DALEE creates wonderful music for the soul. Her lyrics tell stories and put feminine power, vulnerability, belonging and patriarchic expectations into the focus and leaves the listener embedded in soft beats and her mellow vocals.

Spending her teenage years discovering music as a violinist, guitarist and piano player she was already writing her first original compositions. “As a mixed-race child I always had trouble finding my position in society.” This process of leaving behind social expectations and finding belonging and shelter in music is an essential topic in her first EP ‘Natural Cycles’. An artist definitely worth keeping an eye on!

“NYC is opening little by little and Gabriela and I have been tested negative for Covid-19. So we decided to get together to spend an evening with photography, drinking and listening to music. Gabi is one of the person I love the most. I love her chill aura and her shining beauty.” tells us photographer Esteban Abdala Torres Campo.

“We talked about her travels to Cuba and Colombia. She told me about her love adventures and we mused about my life in the city and my love and desire for the future. We danced around in the room and enjoyed the sun coming slowly through the window. We got drunk and we ate Colombian “arepas”. We just let the evening fade away, leaving a memory of this beautiful afternoon and these sensual photographs made in 35mm color positive and black and white film. A series about intimacy and confidence.”

A moment with architect Alan Prekop

photography by Jakub Gulyas

We sat down with Bratislava based architect and art lover Alan Prekop to talk about sustainability, inspirations and why he always ends up in the kitchen as his favourite room.

Alan, tell us a bit about yourself.

I am 30 years old, I live in Bratislava. I am an architect but I also play in band.
Purist. Bad Karma Boy. I love music, art and good food.

When you were a child did you always want to become an architect?

No, when I was little, I had a lot of energy, so I used it for sport which has kept me busy until this day. I did a lot of sports but stayed loyal to baseball for the longest. By the end of my high school years however, I needed to decide what’s next for me and found myself in a community of architects which influenced me heavily. In 6 months I learned how to draw, re-caped the history of art and went to try my luck at university. Luckily, they accepted me to enroll that year.

Can you tell us about the flat or house you grew up in?

My father was also an architect but I never got to know him. He left us when I was little. But I can remember that we have always lived in pretty interiors. First it was my father’s house which he designed himself in the best 90’s fashion. I still remember the kitchen table in moraine black wood with tiles on top. My father was crazy like this and I have definitely inherited this…
Later on, we lived at my grandma´s who lived in a gorgeous family house which was designed and built by my granddad, who was also an architect and whom I also never met as he passed away before I was even born. So I guess architecture was a path I’ve chosen due to all this.

How would you describe your signature style?

Not sure if I have a signature style for design – my taste and preferences always change and I love to experiment. I try to promote raw materials, natural colours, and expose their structure; raw wood, concrete, steel, etc. to which I add some colourful accents.

“In my latest project, I used old material and managed to reycycle used steel, wood, and stone and gave them a second chance.”

Are you concerned about environmental and social sustainability in your designs? And what role does green architecture play into your work?

In my latest project, I tried to use old material and managed to reycycle used steel, wood, and stone, which would otherwise be thrown away. Luckily I used it wisely for interiors and gave it a second chance.

What is your favorite room in your home?

My favourite room is without a doubt the kitchen. I love to cook and host people at mine, but even if it is just a simple party or afterparty, we always end up in the kitchen behind the bar which is the best place to hang out and drink until dawn.

Who inspires you?

Everything – friends, family, my surroundings.. When I find myself being stuck, I tend to discuss it with someone over a glass of wine to expand my horizon. Especially if these people are not architects and tell me their layman and practical opinion which always opens my eyes for something new and drives me forward. Architects tend to overthink little things which limits their input and… well, themselves, so a healthy bucket of self-reflection is sometimes needed.

What books or magazines do you have on your bedside table?

C-Heads (smiles) or cooking and art books

What’s the last movie you watched?

JOJO RABIT

Any place we should visit as an architecture and design lover in Bratislava?

I suggest to visit the Slovak radio station building with its iconic construction which is an upside down pyramid with a steel frame. The Slavin, from which you have the best view over my hometown; and the Crematorium which is the most beautiful construction in whole Bratislava.

Its eleven pm and the freeways are washed in hues of orange, staining from the street lights flickering under the slow nightfall.

You turn on the stereo and I pull the windows down, resting my arm, flicking off my burning cigarette onto the dusty pavement, just barely alive.  A static noise strikes the air and soon the music floods into the car, reminding me of simpler times when all I had to think about was school, homework and keep up with what’s new in town? I tap my fingers over the steering wheel as you pull back your seat, your feet over my dashboard, singing along religiously with your eyes closed to the world.

“I wish we had more time, why did I ever wanna grow up?”

Your voice blatantly out of tune but the fact that you never cared was really all that mattered. I bite my lip and suppress a grin, don’t want to jinx it now do I? Instead I wrap your flannel tighter around, losing myself as the smell of your cologne overwhelms my senses.

I rest my head back, watching the blinding lights of the passing cars flash by. Green, yellow, red and white all blurred together like bits of broken glasses in a kaleidoscope pulled together. We stop at red lights and every time without fail, you lean in kissing my cheek, sometimes my neck, smiling against my lips.

It’s ecstatic and God, do I feel my ears burning or feel the butterflies dancing in my belly.

Ten miles past L.A and the roads start to clear. With just enough cash to last one summer, ready to run through open roads, stay in crappy motels and having suspicious neighbours. We leave behind the familiar and drive to the unknown.

I pull the top down and you laugh as I’ve suddenly caught you off guard. My hair tangles all at once and I put my right hand up in air. The cool breeze caresses my fingers like slipping silk as you stand screaming my name and yours against the unforgiving wind.

I don’t know this feeling. It’s new and I’ve never felt this before. Like butter melting on warm toast or a hot shower in December, its warmth that I feel. I feel calm yet elated like I everything I need, I’ll find in all the roads coming ahead.

You sit back inside, your voice hoarse from screaming so loud. Your face is red and your hairs in all mess; still you smile your crooked smile and lean in, yet again. You are an old school at heart and I love everything vintage. Honestly it’s a blurry line separating adulation and obsession.

My head remains in the clouds as I drive off further at forty miles per hour. The destination is far and I hope it remains that way for quite some time. I don’t know the home I’ll find at the end of the road but it feels so familiar in these car seats with you, me and a stereo full of old school songs. It’s funny because we’ve been on the road for only three hours but you know what they say; sometimes you can fit forever only in a second if not more.

A nostalgic and honest musical journey with “Sonn – These Days (feat. T.Evann)”

We had a chat with the 21-year-old British producer Sonn about his new single, creative moments and the chance to have a fresh start.

How did you get interested in making music and what or who influenced you in your decision to become a musician?

I’ve always been interested in music and how people make their music from a young age. I’ve been playing drums since I was like 6 or so, and ended up playing in bands. For me a natural development from that was making my own music and wanting to let the world know what I had to say. I can’t say there was one particular person who influenced me to become a musician, it kinda just happened.

The song “These Days” is about…?

These days days is about getting caught up in a relationship so much that you lose touch on reality and find yourself in a headspace where that is all you can think about. Whether it being from a positive or negative standpoint, it’s about learning to balance these feelings so that it is manageable to still focus on other life endeavours.

T.Evann’s voice fits perfectly to the beautiful sound – how did the collaboration come about?

T.Evann and I met at a Boiler Room event in 2018 and we just stayed in contact. He was posting snippets of his music on instagram and I loved it so I hit him up to work and we’ve been great friends since. I think we wrote the song about a year ago now in our first writing session.

The track is out of your upcoming EP. Describe the vibe of the EP in three words.

Nostalgic, Euphoric, Honest.

In what situation or which place do you get your most creative moments for song-writing?

It tends to vary, I can usually write in most places I just have to have the inspiration for it and that is kind of random, but for example if I wrote a song at 4am it would sound completely different to a song I would write at 2pm.

“If I wrote a song at 4am it would sound completely different to a song I would write at 2pm.”

Do you have a musical role model?

I do not think so, I feel like I listen to so much music that I get inspired from many different places. But some of my favourite artists right now are James Blake, Toro y moi, Kllo and Emerson Leif.

What inspired you to make this short movie/video “rumours”?

I feel like my strongest senses are audio and visual and I wanted to portray a feeling with the visuals just the same as the music.

Where did you learn to move on or make a fresh start yourself?

When I first moved to the UK for school. For me it was a new country and a new environment, I decided it was a chance to refresh and have a new start.

Best thing about being young?

Having a young body and being able to move freely haha

Most difficult thing?

Not being taken seriously, for some reason young people’s opinions are disregarded a lot of the time, I can never wrap my head around that.

What would you have liked to achieve before you are 30?

This is a hard question, there’s a lot of small things but for me the biggest and most important achievement would be still being able to make music comfortably and enjoying myself while doing so.

Favourite movie and book?

Star wars lol, it’s a nostalgia thing. Honestly, I don’t really read as much as I probably should but “Thinking, Fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman, I enjoy reading about how the mind works.

Anything else you want to tell to the world?

My new song with T.Evann is out now and my EP “Something, Safe” Is out 28th of August! I cant wait for everyone to hear it!

It has been too long since we last posted an exclusive series by photographer Jonas Nordqvist. Three years is a long time, isn´t it? Finally he is back on C-Heads, this time with a simple but effective series starring muse Edda Saxell of Nordic Model Agency.

“I recently got my hands on my new car: A mint condition Porsche 911 from 1985, same year as I was born. Edda and I have already done numerous photo shoots together before and this time we decided to go for something different. And this series is inspired by the grunge era as well as the 80s and we used the car as a prop. We got our heads together for the styling, Edda is very creative and except for modeling she also produces her own music.”

Nigerian born, Dublin raised rapper Archy Moor finally releases his first single this year called “The Long Road” featuring North London artist Osquello. A relaxing track with smooth and breezy atmosphere.

Speaking on the track, Archy explains: “The track touches on the trudge and hardships before reaching something beautiful, and acknowledging the journey it takes to see it. It’s not always the easiest trying not to be consumed by the negativity your facing, but somehow it does get better, we just need more peace and more love.”

And Osquello adds: “The fact we are in some messed up world situation, but the same personal small issues / beautiful things are what fuel me and get me going still. But it’s a long way till I can even come to terms with them issues / beautiful situations”
