OMG. This collaboration is too good to be true. Mirage Magazine founder and one of the best photographers on globe Henrik Purienne is responsible for the amazing For Love & Lemons lingerie SKIVVIES Spring 2014 collection lookbook starring breathtaking beauty Anastasia Krivosheeva at Photogenics. ”Inspired by vintage classic silhouettes re-vamped to fit the modern woman this collection is meant to be shown off. It plays with virginal combinations of ivory & white, powdery neons, and lingerie pieces made in unusual textiles. ”  I struggle for words – maybe someone can help me out.

BROKE-feat.-MO---Let-The-Youth-Go-Mad-screenshot

“‘Art’ created and built organically from a true passion will resonate with people and naturally take off, and perhaps so can ‘art’ that is manufactured to make money but probably won’t stand the test of time.”

Emma Dudlyke, is a London based photographer, whose work isn´t so much about fashion; but she uses it to dress her thoughts for her shoots. Learning about film photography was the best way for her to fall in love with the whole subject. Her settings, outfits and visual language are elaborate and picturesque; and one image feels more than just one moment, because of the many details going on.

We talked to Emma about her first memories of taking pictures, her shooting process, and about art and commerce.

How did the world of photography show up in your life? And can you remember your very first image that you were happy with?

I’ve been lucky to have travelled all around the world with my family, so photographing and documenting these new unfamiliar but incredible places came naturally. It would pain me inside if someone had forgotten the camera, sort’ve as if all of the memories had never happened. Photography became more real for me when I went to sixth form, I pretty much got one on one teaching as not many people did photography – so it was amazing to learn how to use the darkroom, develop film contact sheets and prints. I think learning with film photography is the best way to fall in love with photography. When I got my hands on a macro lens, shit got real haha so I started taking those really cliché photos of nature like pollen, blades of grass, flowers, eyes you name it! And from that trusty little macro lens I produced my first ever photos that I was really proud of. Close up abstract photos of pink roses dripping with black paint. I loved it because it was so juicy and detailed – but now I look back and they’re a bit cringe, but everyone’s got to start somewhere.

Describe your style in one sentence.

Reclining into deep green velvet theatre chair
in the middle of a small dark room
surrounded by damp wallpaper and draped curtains
dimly lit by waxed candelabras
cigarette smoke fills the room like smog

outside its winter, but here it is hot
and through your rose tinted glasses
you watch girls with bodies beautiful to look at
dancing naked with only sequins left, unapologetically

I come here to stimulate

Some of your shootings seem very elaborate. What is the usual creative process at a shooting?

Some of my shoots do seem elaborate and I guess they are! I wish I could shoot in a landscape of sand dunes or a lagoon but for now I’m fortunate enough to have some wacky friends that live in these amazing places I’ve shot in. Everything can inspire me so in a daydream or a thought a little mental invention sparks and I go from there – these ideas only are born and made into a reality if I have found the right location or created the right scene and atmosphere, then from there it’s all an exciting collaboration between the team and the scene, like a performance. It never quite come out as I’ve imagined but that’s what is exciting. My work isn’t so much about the fashion, although it does have a massive part to play but to me fashion is just messing around and I use it to dress my thoughts for my shoots.

I noticed you had Georgia Jagger in front of your camera. How was working with her?

We went to 6th form together and we both were studying photography. Now I think about it I actually got her to do some silly things, like re-enacting Botticelli’s Venus and superimposing her into a sea shell. This was all before she started modelling full time, so working with her was always on a friendly fun silly basis, but she’s a beautiful girl and that’s why I loved photographing her for my projects. I’ve actually even got some Freud-esque portraits I painted of her which I’m quite proud of somewhere hanging up in the school.

You can’t take your eyes of what?

Nina Kraviz

Do you think that art and commerce rule each other out?

‘Art’ created and built organically from a true passion will resonate with people and naturally take off, and perhaps so can ‘art’ that is manufactured to make money but probably won’t stand the test of time.

“Music is my Nectar” is a sentence by you. What´s your favourite track these days?

Music is paramount in my life, always searching and absorbing. It’s hard to say what my favourite track right now is because there is so much great stuff I’m loving – so let’s go on my current mood – I’m excited about a trip to Berlin tomorrow so the my track would be – The The – Uncertain Smile from one of the greatest albums ‘Soul Mining’ from the 80’s and one that is really dear to me. It’s intellectual and emotional uplifting your spirits and yet the lyrics are heart wrenching, a little bit philosophical and actually filled with a lot of self-loathing. The piano solo in ‘Uncertain Smile’ by Jools Holland is one of my favourite piano solos so have a listen and hopefully enjoy as I much as I am right now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz50N2_tCCg

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I want to look back on my life and say that I did cool stuff – so I hope to be doing exactly what I love – photography, travelling collaborating and just finding a way and place to express myself in this big world we all live in.

fleecy materials, candy colors and shining details

I got as excited as a little kid when I found out about French shoe designer Amélie Pichard who launched her brand in 2011. Taking inspiration from bygone times her designs are playful and sensual, “dreamy but realistic, masculine but terribly sophisticated”. We see fleecy materials, candy colors and shining details .With the wonderful SS14 collection “Amélie plays with the clichés of à woman fantasized by a bully with his imagination fueled by B movies and vintage erotic magazines”. Photographed by Nicolas Coulomb we have a new favorite over there.

How could they know that? We have such a big crush on things to do with Japan. From over here  all seems like this fascinating, colorful world of Mangas and Tokyo is def one of our next travel spots. Lazy Oaf obviously also fell for this world and dropped out their new campaign videos filmed in the  bright lights of those vibrant cities. Mayoimashita means “Lost” in Japanese and previews some of the awesome items from their latest collection by entering a world of flashing neon lights, animatronic dino’s and a larger than life bikini clad robotic women  starring beauty April Johnson. The second video continues with their Japanese themed content and they took Australian model Dave Ross for a walk around the bright streets of Shibuya at night which results into their latest short teaser “Nothing”.

a far away memory.

monday inspiration: the concept of failure.

image-by-rachele-maggiimage by Rachele Maggi

there is no such thing as “failure” because failure is really nothing more than a temporary setback, a moment where you may need to course correct, or maybe, if you look hard enough, an important lesson to be learned. so instead of fearing or avoiding failure, accept it. welcome it. even go as far as embrace it because failure is an essential part of life and more importantly, it means that you are trying. it means you are putting in effort to get yourself out there…and that, in itself, is a very good thing.

so, don’t be afraid to get out there and fail, fail, fail. and then fail some more. only then, will you find, as Ralph Waldo Emerson eloquently once wrote:  “success unexpected in common hours.”

Burst of Colours: A talk with Elise Rose

1277498_591477230891736_1113346332_o

“It’s all about capturing the special little moments or details that may otherwise be lost in the commotion”

21-year-old Elise Rose, besides being an avid tea drinker, is a young and promising fashion photographer who has had the opportunity to see her work published in several international publications already. Originally from Coventry, Elise finished her degree in “Photography for fashion and advertising” last year and is currently based in London.
Her world of art and creativity has always also gone further than the photographer part. It was drawing, painting, music and moving image that have helped her developing her photographic eye. It all started with a few photo shoots with friends and models and then “grew up” and became the colourful work that we can see today.
David Lachapelle, Miles Aldridge and Tim Walker are some of the photographers whose work inspired her and made her develop her “second eye”.

All your work is subjected to a major theme – fashion. What fascinates you in this big world?

I’m particularly fascinated by Japanese Harajuku style & British fashion. I think there is an exciting new breed of designers and creatives coming out in the British fashion industry that take their work seriously, but not fashion itself which is a real breath of fresh air. There’s a very quirky & unique vibe. I always seek inspiration from everything around and I can see this coming forward in certain designers work such as Ashley Williams, Katie Eary and Ryan Lo.

Although the vast majority of my work is fashion based, I’m very much inspired by other creative mediums. A lot of my fashion editorial work references films, surrealism, popular culture.

Where you withdraw your inspiration? Do you have any muse?

Whilst I wouldn’t necessarily call LaChapelle a muse, a particular quote of his really spoke to me “If you want reality, take the bus.” I always like there to be an element of bold colour, contrast or surrealism in my work. Wes Anderson films, animation, psychedelia. Anything that takes you out of the cynicism of reality. Whilst I can appreciate the beauty in simplicity, I’ve always loved the idea of something more.

A common question to all lovers of photography is the preference between analog and digital photography. What is your opinion about both?

I can see good in both options and use both within my work.
When I first started to get into photography I used a digital camera, but over the years have increasingly grown to love using film and can understand why people lean more towards the medium.
I like with film that you never know what you are truly going to get, and it’s always exciting when processing the images, but I don’t feel that your preference defines your photographic style or skill. Perhaps I’m more or an artist than a photographer. In my editorial work I get the most enjoyment from creating sets and story lines whilst trying to capture them in vivid and unusual ways. With my backstage fashion reportage work, it’s all about capturing the special little moments or details that may otherwise be lost in the commotion. I can go from liking raw imagery to plastic fantastic, so I use the equipment that I feel best fits the story I’m trying to tell.

It is impossible not to associate colours to the work of Elise Rose. It is present from the layout of the site over to all your work. What represents colour to you?

My hometown was a very dark and grey city atheistically, and as a child I was always obsessed with colourful story books and anime. I guess for me, colour has always represented a form of escape into something new.

How do you define your relationship with the model? How does the initial established relationship influence the final work?

I think your relationship with a model can greatly define the outcome of the final imagery. When doing my editorial work I always like to interact with the model as much as possible so we’re on a similar wavelength, because the connection is apparent in the image. When models are more relaxed in their surroundings, I find they are more open to playing around and trying out some of the crazier things we like to try out on shoots.

The playful and provocative nature of Juregen Teller and Ellen Von Unwerth’s work has always fascinated me in that respect. The way they play with femininity and high contrast, whist capturing the true essence of the models persona.

Despite being the person behind the camera, do you also like to be in front of it?

I’m more interested in shooting other subjects rather than myself.

You have only 21 and you have had the opportunity to collaborate and see your work published in several places. Although we are constantly learning, do you feel you have accomplished almost all you wanted or this is just one of the small steps to achieve something greater?

I agree that we are always learning. I am proud of what I have achieved, but I will always be hungry to create something new. I believe there’s always a higher level you can push yourself to.
I would love to travel to more countries to shoot.

A person with whom you would like to collaborate in the future.

I would love to work with Nicola Formichetti.

A dream.

To shoot an editorial in Japan.

Future Projects.

I have quite a few exciting editorials and commissions in the pipeline. Watch this space!

Marika Hackman – Deaf Heat

Marika-Hackman1

“I guess there’s quite a dark side to me. It always comes out when I’m writing songs.”

I guess that´s what makes this music so interesting as well – this sort of dark melancholical note to it. Dark Green is a song out of the about to be released EP Deaf Heat by former Burberry model Marika Hackman. It will be released through Dirty Hit Records on the 14th of April.

‘Deaf Heat’ moves with an air of confidence yet also feels tender and vulnerable, anchored by the dark allure of Marika’s endlessly imaginative arrangements. From the haunting and beautiful lead track ‘Deep Green’ to the otherworldly harmonies of ‘Tongues’, each song uncovers an artist undaunted to challenge traditional conventions to create something that’s at once classic and contemporary.

Following a triumphant 2013, which saw included the release of two acclaimed EPs and tours across the UK, Europe and Australia, Marika now has her eyes firmly set on the future. Having already been named winner of the UK Blog Sound Of 2014 poll, this spring will see Marika Hackman heading back into the studio with Charlie Andrew to start work on her debut album as well as heading out to play the following UK shows:

Sónar Barcelona completes the main bloc of its music line-up with the addition of more than 50 new artists headed by the legendary Chic, one of the greatest dance bands of all time, masterminded by Nile Rodgers.

The festival also includes shows by various Nordic artists currently receiving a great deal of attention, including Neneh Cherry and Lykke Li, who are both deploying their great talent for pop, electronica and soul and presenting their new albums at Sónar. The northern team consisting of the Norwegian duo Röyksopp and the Swedish singer Robyn, who promise large doses of high-flying electropop euphoria, also Todd Terje, the king of cosmic disco and Trentemøller, who with his band will be presenting songs from the recent “Lost,” halfway between indie pop and epic electronica.

Sónar will also present the immersive digital experiences from Audion and Daito Manabe, the former with a show of pure techno designed by the people behind ISAM, by Amon Tobin; and the latter with a show that combines videomapping and contemporary dance. Latest additions to Sónar line-up also include a visionary artists like Dam-Funk (retro-futuristic electro-boogie), Kid Koala (scratch and cabaret), Forest Swords (dub and ancestral folk), Henry Saiz (organic electronica) and the collision of languages between one of the most important figures at today’s sonic cutting edge, Oren Ambarchi, and Sinfonietta Cracovia in a collaboration between Sónar and the Polish festival Unsound.

Funk and hip hop are in the DNA of three iconoclastic artists who will be at Sonar by Day: Kid Koala returns with a new show – Vinyl Vaudeville 2.0, which features turntable mischief and revamps classic genres of black music in a contemporary cabaret format. Dâm-Funk will be bringing vintage synthesisers and drum machines to thrill partygoers with their sizzling retro-futurist boogie-funk. Spoek Mathambo will be at the helm of Fantasma, a supergroup of South African musicians who fuse the country’s house and psychedelic traditions into a powerful, vibrant sound. For yet another year the Academy presents an extensive and intense programme in which some of the most talented young artists such as Koreless, Astroboyz, T. Williams or De La montagne shows their art… All of them, as always, at SónarDôme.

“…I want to provoke with my photography and have it presented in a natural way. Intimate. A little daring, provocative. Real. Human. Think French cinema where women have always been represented as equals. What I do is a form of expression. I am privileged to be able to tell stories through images. I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

The Australian photographer Akila Berjaoui uses her camera to journal and document her life and using her work as reflection of how she is feeling – like a visual diary of her ups and downs. “I know my destination, but not the road to go there.”

The images of French photographer Aurélien Buttin are as perfect as a soft hug, a splendid sunrise, a glowing sunset. He is a traveller at heart, an adventurer – and with his camera he captures the stories he experiences along the way. And there are many more places to be explored, but never without the beloved device. “A trip without my camera at all ? Never ! If I haven’t got my camera I prefer to stay at home.”

“Every person, every place is a photo, more or less interesting of course. If you look with your child’s eyes, the life is a photo.” Which of your photos describes your current life best?

For now I haven’t got money, and without money, no travel, without travel, no exciting photos to take and share, I’ve done thousand times photos around my city and its surroundings. So now I’m like a homeless in my mind. The photo which describes my current life best, I mean right now is « Le millionnaire » I guess.

You usually like to photograph people surrounded by unusual places, landscapes, furniture. Pick one of the most unusual images that you have taken lately and tell us a little about the story behind it.

There is a lot of them, every single photo has a story. « Human Collection » is a photo that I took in a crazy house full of stuffed animals, human skulls, and very old stuff. The owner of this house told me « hey ! I have an aquarium if you want to put a girl into it. » And it happened. About the landscapes it’s always when you’re not looking for it that you find the best place, for example the photo « Jaws » was in Indonesia, I was in a car and I saw on the road side a big fish at the border of the jungle, so I stopped the car and shot it. « At The End Of The World » is a photo taken during a trip in Indonesia, I was with friends in an ashes’s desert, it was just an awesome place! I think that I can’t get this image out of my mind. The Sahara was a unique experience too and I think that you can feel this in the photo called « The King Of The Desert ». « We Are Dust » is a photo that I took when I walked alone in Kazbegi, in Georgia, I saw this woman sitting alone in the front of a huge mountain, it was really peaceful and such an uncredible place. And I love to take a common moment of my life, I just see a good image, I take my camera and shoot it, « A Winter With You » or « Globe Trotters » is this kind of moment.

“I consider the travel like the ultimate freedom, it’s learning to live.” Is another quote by you. The best life lessons you have taken from your trips so far?

I learnt that I’m nothing and everything at the same time. I met awesome people from all around the world, rich or poor, no matter the religion, the ideas… Everybody is unique and beautiful. Every place is unique too. But I’m not traveling to get to know new people, I’m traveling to know myself. The travel is like walking into youself to the answer at this question « Who am I ? ».
I stayed one week alone in the great Caucasus, the border between Georgia and Russia. During this time spent there I did everything by myself, I slept outside in the woods in my sleeping bag, I took water from the springs, everything was hard and simple, without cigarettes, without phone, web, just alone on the earth and under the stars. It was one of the best experiences and the best life lesson that I have taken from that is, you can do everything because everything is possible, never give up.

What are the places you still really want to see? And could you imagine to do a trip without your camera at all?

I want to see all places haha. But on the top of my list is Argentina, Iceland, Antarctica, Australia, Mongolia and Namibia. A trip without my camera at all ? Never ! If I haven’t got my camera I prefer to stay at home.

“The true traveller doesn´t know where he goes”, is a Chinese proverb that you have posted once. Is that something you live by or do you somehow know in which direction you are heading towards?

I know my destination, but not the road to go there. It’s more exciting to travel in this way. I am on the road, looking around and think « wow it seems great over there ! » So I change my direction to follow only my instinct and my eyes even if I still have in the back of my mind my destination nothing prevents me to make a detour. It’s really the most fun way to travel like this.

“The best thing about living in New York is that if you want like, dried coconut and iced coffee and raisin bran at 4:00 am you don’t have to go farther than a block to get it.”

Hurray on girl bands! The Prettiots are a New York three-piece girl band made up of Kay Goldberg, Rachel Trachtenburg and Lulu Prat, arriving with glittering, indie art-pop. Their sound is somehow uncoerced and fresh and reminds us about the days hanging out with your girlfriends, painting the town red. Living for the moment with ideas leaping in our minds. About parties, about love, just anything really.
We talked to The Prettiots about their upcoming album, their visions, and we added some superb images of them shot by the awesome photographer Colin Dodgson

What does music mean to you?

It can be the simplest and most complex thing in the world and thats why it is beautiful and vital.

“The Prettiots” are…? And how did you get together as a band?

A Girl Band. It started as a misguided solo project that was rescued by the the epic talents of Rachel and Lulu, we are star crossed.

I read of your plans on releasing an album. Can you already tell us about it? And how do you create your songs together?

The album is cute and fun and cool and sweet and mean and silly and smart and dumb and honest. The lyrics to our songs are very honest and they come out of things that we think of everyday. The music grows out of that and usually starts with a ukulele riff.

An artist is always a dreamer, what are your visions?

I guess I have a lot of them– primarily I want to be able to make music and art that I love, but I also want to be an astronaut and a cowboy and a doctor and also be able to shrink anything down to pocket size and also eat a hundred cupcakes everyday forever.

If you have to compare your music to a famous artwork, what would it be?

I went to art school so you would think this question would be the easiest but it was definitely the hardest. I guess I would say any work by Aya Takano, weird and cute and sweet and dark.

Your music is also influenced by New York. What´s the best thing on living there. And where can we find you on a Friday night?

The best thing about living in New York is that if you want like, dried coconut and iced coffee and raisin bran at 4:00 am you don’t have to go farther than a block to get it.  Also the people and places and things. And libraries. And The Frick.

Where do you see “The Prettiots” in the future?

Hmmm ..performing “Dream Boy” at the future version of The Superbowl which takes place in a floating stadium that is really a hologram with robot back up singers.
