“I’m a fantasist but I make it a reality” A talk with jewelry designer KT Ferris Creations

$

0

“I wanted to create jewelry that was smart, and different, something to watch over you.”

Founded in New York City in 2012, Kt Ferris Creations create some pretty unusual and kind of creepy cute jewelry. Her inspiration comes from the unknown in the deepest parts of nature, the all seeing eye and the urge to make people feel good. And it´s all about blinking doll eyes, crystals, spikes, precious stones and various metals. All images photographed by Danny Lane.

How would your friends describe you?

“A bouncy goofball. Generous, thoughtful, hard working and creative ding dong wrapped up in a blanket of energy” that is a direct quote from my “Bad Seed” :)

Your pieces looks very moody and kind of strange. How would you describe them yourself and where do you draw your inspiration from?

I wanted to create jewelry that was smart, and different, something to watch over you. I also wanted it to be a little goofy, or for some people scary, and interactive. I use blinking doll eyes to protect the owner, and the metal work is inspired from nature.

And where do your ideas evolve from?

They evolve when I take a step back and relax. I remember the moment I saw this fungus on this particular branch when I was on a trip with some friends Upstate in the woods. I knew the moment I saw it I had to reinvent it with my jewelry. It’s become one of my signature “shapes” I use in a lot of my designs. I’ll see a shape and it will just stick with me.

What kind of person wears your jewelry?

I sell my work at an artists market in Brooklyn called “Artists and Fleas”. When I first started I was surprised to see such a wide variety of people who bought my work. Anyone from your mom, to a fashionista to a plain jane to your boyfriend. I think the people who wear my work are smart, they get it and they think outside the box.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I love brass, and of course, doll eyes. My favorite techniques are the oldest there are. All of my designs are hand carved. There’s nothing like starting with a big block of carving wax and widdling it down to a spiky creature.

Are you a realist or fantasist?

I would say I’m a little of both, I’m a fantasist but I make it a reality.

Do you have a style icon you admire?

Ya know, not really. But I will say, the owner of Nasty Gal, Sophia Amoruso is pretty friggin awesome. I guess she would be my girl boss icon. The way she built an empire with no debt is so inspiring to me, plus she’s hot.

The most important thing in life?

The most important thing in life is to love what you do for a living, and do it with passion.

Let´s catch the stars.“I want to be able to make music and art that I love, but I also want to be an astronaut and a cowboy and a doctor and also be able to shrink anything down to pocket size and also eat a hundred cupcakes everyday forever.” told us the three-piece girl band The Prettiots a while ago. Kay Goldberg, Rachel Trachtenburg and Lulu Prat debut now their new single “Anyways” - a lovely catchy song filled with their sugary voices.

In the love that gusts – A Poem By Greta Bellamacina

$

In the love that gusts, and watches me die over and over in the sails.
By the flameless between there are the surrounds of your barricades
and they are patterned, saying tears-that-have-just-dropped
in running blue lawns, in running blue rushes
provoking the resting sunlight pixels,
revolting in the standing pine tenderness;
Intoxicating the mouths of dandelions that bronze the innocence.
I remember all those celling lights to feel that I am, in and those cellings
made out from lamentations and drank eyes. Upwards cries.
Unlooked for and hidden away in the ideas of shadows
in the ideas of my darling, biting the roundness of the canals of closed door handles, that open carefree, as I bite again for the blackness to drift slowly over the lateness of my left bedroom, for the love that gusts.

Kate Bellm for Lika Mimika Lookbook SS15

I am actually not the typical woman who loves buying shoes, but those ones from LIKA MIMIKA footwear have awakened my desire to go for a shoe hunt. Handcrafted in a small factory with environmentally friendly materials in the South of Spain, you can feel the love and warmth within the design and colours. And photographer Kate Bellm has created a fantastic lookbook in the middle of one of the most stunnning cactus scenery we have ever seen.

Fluent In Grey – Debut track “Lost”

The grey, heavy November sky is laying like a dark cover above the roofs of my city. And I found the perfect soundtrack for this melancholical, yet somehow recharging mood. The debut track Lost by the London ambient dreampop band Fluent In Grey squirms and writhes through my mind with its melodic elements of electronic and indie pop. Mixed by Brett Shaw who has worked with Daughter, Clean Bandit, Florence & The Machine. In January Anna Marcella, Simon Langford, Marco Italia and Phil Page will record their debut EP with the release date set for spring 2015. With Lost a foretaste of what is to come promises an aweful lot.

“Finding the line between the soul and something divine” A talk with Lauren Field

$

Moody memories, intimate moments and instants full of love. Lauren Field is a twenty year old photographer and writer from Portland currently living in New York City.

What is the essence of being an artist for you?

Finding the line between the soul and something divine.

And where does your passion for photography come from?

The desire to create life affirming and deeply moving images.

What moments of your life do you wish you could hold onto for more than just an instant?

Every moment with everyone I love.

A beautiful image is?

One that momentarily overwhelms you and lingers for long after: the passage in One Hundred Years Of Solitude where Colonel Aureliano Buendia was taken to discover ice, the painting A Portrait of A Young Woman by Villers, two figures standing on a cliff, struck by the blue fog over the Oregon Coast and the dripping forest at their backs, with trees cumming sweet sap.

What camera(s) do you use?

I work mostly in medium format film (Mamiya 645)

Your work is very sensual and calm. How would you describe your own work?

Moody and intimate.

What makes you laugh?

The web series High Maintenance. So funny.

Instagram or Facebook?

I don’t have a Facebook. So I guess Instagram? Ugh. You can follow me @lolo.field

Which artists inspire you?

Virginia Woolf, Waxahatchee, Cassatt, Margaret Durow, and my dear friend Molly Walls, my muse and creative partner.

What are your morals for your life and your world?

Happy Everything.

Where can we find you on a Friday night in New York?

At the east village bar Barber Shop, until I got kicked out…

What’s your song of the week…?

Will Coutts for Subversive´s debut collection

$

Today we introduce you to a new unisex accessories brand called Subversive. They took influences from vastly different experiences – music, extreme sports and events production to fashion design and being part of an all-girl graffiti crew.

“For us, Subversive is connected to the the fact we’ve always lived in urban environments – but it’s also about travelling and discovering new corners of the planet.” On their first collection they collaborated with upcoming photographer Will Coutts and the models Tu Bang, Reema Reem, Suren My Panda Shall Fly and Max Granger. “Dont be good, be great!“ for us is not only the name of the first collection but also our motto for day to day life. Everything is about doing what you believe in and making your own way of getting there. Thats why for the first photoshoot we decided to invite our friends who – for us are the ambassadors of this sentence; strong personalities with amazing style and creative background. Definitely following their own routes.” And we say: Be great means also to do good! Because actions always speak louder than words…

Julia by Janneke Storm for C-Heads

“The earth has music for those who listen.” - George Santayana

“As true wanderers at heart we’re always itching for our next adventure so it’s only natural for this to flow into our shoots. A secluded beach met by steep cliffs and endless national park was the obvious setting for our model Julia to explore. The clouds slowly came over providing us with the perfect mood for the shoot. After a few hiccups at the beginning of the day, including witnessing a fatal argument between two kookaburras, the shoot came together perfectly thanks to the incredible team.”

Video: Window by HVOB

Well, HVOB need little introduction: After the release of several EP‘s and a full length album, the project of Anna Müller and Paul Wallner has established itself as an integral part of the Austrian electronic music scene. Now, the Vienna based duo is preparing its next coup. Their coming up fifth EP, which was presented at the Parallel Vienna Art Fair a few weeks ago, is the result of the collaboration with Viennese artist Clemens Wolf and the VJ‘s of the lichterloh-collective and sort of a complex art project fusing together music, video and installation. The EP, named after the title track „Window“, comes along with the no less hypnotic track „Oxid“ and two remixes of the title track by Gui Boratto and Acid Pauli. „Window“ is available on vinyl and digitally from November 28th via Stil vor Talent. Until then, you can watch the video right here:
