Meet me at Fools Gold Day Off New York

$

Meek Mill, ILoveMakonnen, ASAP Ferg, and Fabolous.  Need I even say anymore?

This years lineup boasted performances by A-Trak, Skepta, Post Malone and more, and while the hot temperatures couldn’t stop the show, a cardboard cutout of Drakes Face stopped Meek Mill dead in his tracks (insert “dweeb” joke here)

With models and bottles backstage, a full crowd in the front and some fire food trucks, the only way this Fools Gold Day Off could have been better were if Drake himself hopped on stage with Meek.

This years fools gold was definitely more crazy than the last.

Iconic heritage label Champion, having earned masses of devoted followers since the early 80s, leaves this sort of nostalgic feeling to almost every generation now.

They have relaunched across Europe in the recent years and have now teamed up with photographer Danika Lawrence, more commonly known by her creative alias, Sirius Film. “Fast becoming a recognised name within London´s creative network, Danika has been building a following of her own over the last year, photographing fresh faced models and influencers from the thriving London scene. In her own candid style, Danika captures her favourite Reverse Weave sweats in a vibrant new series featuring Koen Prince-Fraser (Select Models) and Akila Hodge.” The clothes look as cool as they look comfortable and Koen and Akila look so rad in them, don´t they? And definitely check out Danika´s website as well, where you can read all the great interviews she does with London people out of the music, photography and art scene.

Quitting.

Text by Michael Taborsky
Photography by Daniel Santalla

“The first time I thought about if I should call it quits, was last summer. I shot about 10 people within a week and was super stressed all the time. I asked myself, do I really want that kind of stress and let it ruin something I love? The week passed and everything was fine again. But lately I started asking myself, if I want to invest so much time and energy into something I always wanted as a career but hasn’t turned out to be more than just a hobby yet.

Recently, tried to analyse what could enable me to take the next step, not just getting better, but also make a living out of it. Of course, delivering the best images possible was the number one on that list, being critical I have to admit, I’m not where I want to be. But self marketing and networking was clearly a big point too. Even though there are quite a few people who like to work with me, it seems that a lot of important ones do not notice my work (or simply do not find it good enough).

Even though I still love photography, love the creative outlet and the people I met through that passion, I need to re-evaluate what I need to do. Quitting may not seem to be an option, but sometimes you might need to take a step back in order to take even more steps forward. If quitting photography, at least shooting fashion & beauty, does help me to go my way in other parts of my life, it might be the right choice.

For the moment, I will concentrate on shooting film, because it’s simple what I first fell in love with and take a break from fashion / beauty. The desire to create that kind of pictures might come back.”

Skin Deep.

It has been a long time since we collaborated with Romanian photographer Andi Singer. Enjoy an intimate and calm C-Heads Exclusive starring breath-taking beauty Maia. “As soon as I heard Maia’s name, I knew there was something special about here. Maya in the Hindu religion is life, the illusion, the dream in which we all live. So I went to see, if the illusion is real. Maia and I instantly hit it off, and there was also a sense that we both knew exactly what we want from each other. I’ve never had so much fun working with a model and I think the results show just how well we got along. Her family name, Theodora, also means “God’s gift” in Greek. I loved her energy, her openness to work with me and of course her stunning beauty. If you have contempt for beauty because it is skindeep, then you don’t know just how deep the skin really is.”

The 21st century girl doesn’t pertain to any stereotype. She’s a chick of many talents, one moment she’s in Europe, the next she’s in Asia. She’s working on several artistic projects at once and killing at every single one. She’s a mix of races – picking up different cultures as she travels. She’s the mysterious girl at the party you want to know her life story who everyone has their eyes on. Here we have sat down and chatted for you.

Michele Maturo is more than just a pretty face. This multi-faceted talent from California is a star on the rise. Whether being a model, DJ, actor, or a writer, this is one women who adds her signature style to every project with which she’s involved. There is something special about Michele that instantly draws you in. A down-to-Earth natural beauty with a girl-next-door appeal, her ‘no nonsense’ attitude earns instant respect from the moment you meet her. Her look is so versatile that she has modeled in campaigns for some of your favourite all-American brands like Pepsi, Reebok, and McDonalds (to name a few), and edgy enough to be featured in music videos with Justin Timberlake and Major Lazer. Her love of music and eagerness for adventure drew her into the world of DJing, and before long she was touring Asia spinning records with Paul Devro of Mad Decent. A film school college graduate and a regular contributor to Galore Magazine, Michele is a beauty with brains to match.

I’m an LA woman! My heart is here, but I’ll travel indefinitely.”

Where do you search for music? Who/what’s your music inspiration?
I was surrounded and immersed in the scene, and with the help of a great mentor I practiced for a year before playing out. I started because I loved exposing my friends to dancehall/hip hop/r&b. I get inspired by any music that can make me move and evoke a positive feeling.

How did you get into writing for Galore Magazine?
Jessie knew how much I love to write and put me in contact with the team. I was looking for another outlet and it was the right timing.

What inspires you to write about certain topics?
People. Normally I ask what people want me to touch base on, and I try my best to answer and always give my honest advice.

What are the meanings behind all your tattoos?
All but one of them have to do with someone I love – whether it be friends or family. I have two matching tattoos and a mouth tattoo that is just for laughs.

What do you do you in your free time?
Read, hike, play with my pups, find new music, arts & crafts, and spend quality time where it’s needed.

Do you see yourself living in California for the next few years or do you want to live someplace else?
I’m an LA woman! My heart is here, but I’ll travel indefinitely.

You talked in previous interviews about your interest in documentaries and filming–have you explored this field recently?
I went to film school so i’ll always have a love for docs, but I just take pictures as my own little hobby, for now‎.

Jamaica is your favourite destination–what do you usually do when you’re there? Any tips for traveling there?
Port Antonio is beautiful – you gotta go there. I hike, eat jerk salmon and crawfish, and venture out (even to the strip clubs‎).

You have been DJing for a few years, what do you love about it and what don’t you love about it?
Djing is a hobby, I have a huge love and appreciation for music and like to share that, but I’ve learned that in order to look fresh faced for shoots I can’t live those late nights anymore.

We heard you’re best friends with Jessie Andrews, how did you two meet?
She’s the best. The Internet is responsible.

How were you like in highschool? (How would people describe you then?)
Had close friends, but was nice to everyone. I couldn’t wait to leave.

Do you think you have changed over the years? If so, in what way?
I’ve come into my own.

Which of your modeling achievements are you most proud of?
It was really cool to see myself on the tallest building in Times Square for a major campaign.

Would you say height matters for the commercial work you are doing?
Not at all‎.

What inspires you to want to start your own skin care line?
I’ve had good skin, bad skin, dry skin, and I like to share what I’ve learned and use with others.

Last but not least, what workout do you do to keep yourself so healthy and energetic and how do you still love fries?! :)
The trick is to stay consistent and not to burn yourself out. I do cross training and work myself out at least 3x a week. Fries are my weakness and I feel I’m able to eat what I want as long as it’s in moderation. One thing I’ve learned is to not make too many rules or restrictions. Just be aware.

Model Maya teamed up with photographer Laura Kaczmarek for a C-Heads Exclusive, that has it all. Style, glam and rock – welcome back to the 80´s.

“I like to shoot special girls they have their own style and character. Natural girls don’t pose too much. Maya is a real 80′s glam rock girl, for her it’s the attitude to life. We shot the story in the Ruhr area in Germany. Found the location with an American flair while we were driving through the streets. It was a perfect fit! The garden „abour” belongs to an old-established hippie names Bruno. During the shooting, we were listening to the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and other great artists. It was really relaxing and inspiring for the shooting.“

I love house parties, I love dressing all in white, I love having drinks dressed in all white at a house party.

Silk draped across the yard, fairy lights dangling everywhere, dj’s & dancefloor inside, lots of hard liquor and disco treats floating around.
Just perfect.

Ground Zero New York Fashion Show: Gangs Far East

$

Brothers and designers, Eric and Phillip Chu, showcased their Ground Zero collection on Sunday, September 13 this past NYFW at The Space. From early beginnings in the 2000′s in London, the two used this year’s theme of, “As You Like It” to forge a harmonious meeting of their rebellious spirit and the new generations mercurial humor.

“The collection is an homage to 90′s gang culture juxtaposed with Asian tradition.  Intricate embroideries of dragons and flowers serve as visual elements to the designers’ roots, while the oversized cuts, and distressed denim provide a modern approach. The femininity of a butterfly breaks the masculinity of a silk bomber jacket, along with other street-ready pieces. Each garment is finely detailed and produces a look that’s quirky, yet dark and sophisticated.

Streetwear staples like technical knits, fishnets, denim and vinyl are key components of this season, as are a rich color palette like orange and beige. The design brothers stay true their graphic design background by incorporating an array of original prints, alongside hand crafted embellishments.

The design concepts are always conflicting and contrasting. Deeply philosophical and transcendental, Ground-Zero is globally re-defining Chinese aesthetic.”

“GROUND-ZERO is a creative fashion brand founded by brothers Eri and Philip Chu in 2008. The Hong Kong-based duo belives that a good design house should be built on a solid foundation, and “ground zero” is the first step of their creative world. Ground-Zero is a literal translation of the designers’ belief that everything has to start from ZERO, where possibilities are unlimited and anything is possible. “

Premiere: Portrait by Fragmento Universo

Fragmento Universo is a Madrid based film production & music design studio and we are very pleased to premiere on C-Heads there latest splendid short film called Portrait directed by Tessa Dóniga  and Christian Baumgartner. “The video is inspired on a personal reflection of different actions and ways of being. We wanted to portray a portrait through the point of view of someone who is in love with the character without appearing himself on the video. We didn’t want to make a love video, but about herself and clothing. It could be a new kind of subtle fashion video that connects clothing with real life details and adorable reactions.” In those two minutes you totally get into the character Aidée that is acted very powerful by Mar del Corral and definitely whets your appetite for a continuation. Make Up by Patricia del Moral. Voice Over by Barnabé Nöel. Color by Tessa Dóniga. Sound Design by Christian Baumgartner and translated by Mónica De la Peña. Special thanks to Mike Evasèe, Guille M. Díez, Mary Urrutia & their good friends at Yorokobu.

“What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot recognize the fact that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin more beautiful than the garment with which it is clothed?”

-Michelangelo

Negative criticism was already circulating and awaited the publishing of this article. This criticism arose from how Philistine people out there who failed to differentiate art from pornography. According to google’s definition of pornography, pornography is “Printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs/activity, intended to stimulate erotic rather than emotional feelings”, and the definition of Art is “The expression of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power”. While pornography is, in my opinion, about degrading a person, nude art on the other hand is about celebrating and praising the beauty of the human body.

About a month ago I stumbled through the controversial works of the Chinese photographer RenHang, and I was awfully inspired. Not only by his provocative photos, but by the fact that he goes as far as to defy the laws of his country in the name of his passion. What his photography speaks to me is that limitations aren’t necessarily barriers.

Working with nudity in my photography was a new experience for me. I didn’t know what to expect, how would the models would react, or how their chemistry would appear in front of the lens. I never thought that one day I’d be photographing them together in one frame, and being able to capture the intimacy of two people that have known each other for so long, but always had a major communication gap. Throughout the shooting I felt as if their connection grew stronger. Their awkwardness fit perfectly together for the concept, and it turned out to be one of the most unexpected photo shoots I have ever been a part of so far.

After editing I realised I couldn’t have combined two models more perfectly, both models share common melancholic eyes, a melancholy that makes you wonder what’s the story behind it. These photos you’re about to see are some honest and raw photos of beautifully awkward portraits of a spontaneous moment.

“I just wish to make the best of myself, and be happy and successful in what I love to do. I see myself being on stage infront of thousands of people, I know it will come one day.”

We continue with our modern woman series, which is all about the 21st century girl. Mercedes Edison is a model, DJ and producer. Although she was born in the UK, she has spent most of her life exploring other places, and says she quite likes living out of her suitcase. Attending school in New York for music producing, gracing covers of various magazine and taking on DJing, her music career is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see what she has in store. As you can tell, Mercedes loves art, and showcases that through her tattoos.

So aswell as a DJ, you also produce music, When did you start getting interested in music production?
Music to me is always the answer to anything! So I just thought, why not do what I love and create music also! I went to school in NYC for music production and finished not so long ago. Since then I’ve been working on some stuff to share soon.

Other than the UK where else have you DJ’d?
I only just started my djing career, so right now England and Europe, soon to be everywhere.

We played rap music while we were shooting, but your DJ genre is more house –what gets you going?
Like I said I LOVE music, I play house and hip hop. Hip hop is for sure my favorite type of music, I love a good twerk! (Haha) when I play hip hop I love seeing the crowd react. Then when I play house I feel like I’m a whole different person and I love the mood it sets.

Where did they name “Unimerce” come from? And why didn’t you want to DJ with your original name?
It’s funny because when I tell people ‘unimerce’ they always pronounce it wrong. It actually rhymes with universe, and merce is short for mercedes, UNI being only one of me , unique !! Mercedes edison is used for my modeling, it’s like having alter egos lol .

What is your dream goal I’m the end?
I just wish to make the best of myself, and be happy and successful in what I love to do. I see myself being on stage infront of thousands of people, I know it will come one day.

How long have you been singing for and have you done any training?
I’m quite shy when it comes to my singing, and sometimes throw up some snapchats if your lucky enough to of seen them haha. But you guys will hear some stuff soon I’m excited to show. I do have a vocal coach – she’s amazing.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I couldn’t possibly tell you, I don’t even know where I’m going to be tomorrow (haha)

Tell us about your tattoos–what was the situation in which you got them and what do they mean?
I started getting tattoos when I was 16. I’ve always been a rebel when it came to my mum telling me ‘no’ the body is a pice of art, we all have stories in our lives, and I like to display them within my tattoos. Every tattoo of mine tells a story of my life and holds a memory.

Other than DJing, music production and modeling, what other hobbies do you have?
I go to the gym religiously, I love fitness. I love travelling, eating good food and hanging out with my loved ones. The simple things!

What would you tell your 15 year old self?
Just to be myself, it got me where I am today and I’m proud of who I am ❤

20 years of music, carnival rides and art installations

Noctural Festival is an annual festival occurring nearly every Labour Day since 1994 in Southern California.  There are usually 5 stages with artists from drum and bass, trance, and house genres.  This year we had Afrojack, Bassnector, Duke Dumont, Kaskade, Keys N Krade, Bingo Players, Knife Party and many more.  To commemorate its 20 year anniversary, the festival was expanded to three days instead of two and had five new stages with over a hundred performers.

“Taking me to days when music was alive”

SG Lewis´s new video for his latest single “Shivers” featuring JP Cooper will crawl under your skin. Directed by Charlie James Reader, who perfectly encapsulated SG’s warm production with a touching, arresting and cosmic video. The London based artist will be playing his first live show in the UK in November and we can expect an album on PMR Records next year. And there is also a fantastic remix of UK duo HONNE with a dream-like reimagining of the original.

SNBRN talks about sunset house, inspirations and art piece

In mid-March Kevin Chapman, aka SNBRN, dropped his debut single “Raindrops” at San Diego’s Fngrs Crssd and left as a highlight of the festival. Since then this LA based DJ has received over 3 million plays for the track on SoundCloud and performing at festivals like Lightning in a Bottle, Lollapalooza and Electric Zoo with his sunset house style. We were able to catch him right before his return to Crssd Fest in October to ask him how he is in the midst of his rising popularity.

 Questions by Mel Truong

How has your summer been?

My summer has been one for the books! I’ve been all over the US and Canada playing so many festivals, it’s been unreal.

You’ve really exploded since Crssd Fest, what are the most prevalent changes you’ve seen since then? Anything that’s caught you off guard?

CRSSD was my first festival I’ve ever played and there was so much anticipation from everyone about how I  was gonna do. After that everything just snowballed from there, and I was given some amazing opportunities.

Can you explain the difference between sunset house and tropical house?

Tropical house is around 112bpm very mellow and guitar driven. Sunset House is faster, more piano driven, higher energy and stays true to that classic house sound. Think of the song that transitions from the end of the day into night and you got it!

After growing up and living in Los Angeles, do you feel that you’re surroundings have influenced your style of music?

Absolutely, there was so much old school hip-hop, reggae and punk when I was growing up. I still listen to a lot of it!

What else do you draw inspiration from?

Day to day life and the experiences that follow. Traveling, meeting new people, different cultures, music festivals, art, etc. If you stay in your room all day and just make music you’re not living. The most inspired I get is the first week when I’m back from touring.

The “Raindrops” music video was different then from what I expected.  There a lot of quick cuts to various scenes of a young model staring back at the camera, a cooler presentation opposed to the warmth and energy of the track. What was your inspiration for the contrast?

For me, music videos should be an art piece, a story to the music. There is something so cheesy when the whole video is just the singer running around in different places. Raindrops touches on the subjects of love and heartbreak so you can feel that in the video.

After making the “Where’s the Aloe?” playlist, has any Aloe Vera company approached you with samples?

Hahaha not yet, but would love to see a Coppertone x SNBRN collab in the future

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself like where you grew up? Any siblings?

I grew up in a little cow town in Marlborough, CT. I attended Eastern Connecticut State University and have a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Before modeling, I interned for a while in juvenile probation. Growing up there wasn’t much to do, so you could find me chasing my two older brothers around in the woods, covered in sap, or trying to sneak my way into playing in their little league baseball games. At times I think it got under their skin a little bit, haha. One year, somehow I snuck my way into playing on my brother’s baseball team when we were kids. They must have been short a player or ten. I had to be about 8 and the only girl because it was of course an all boys team, so the rest of the kids were 1011 yr old boys. Anywho, my brother got up to bat and struck out, and then I proceeded to to take my turn at the plate and hit a grand slam and won the game. Not much has changed to this day. I recently played in my brothers work league game and I’m still dirty and covered in sap.

Were you able to visit Norway growing up where your Mom is from and learn about their culture?

Both my parents are American, but my mother’s parents were from Norway, and my Father’s family is African American with Cape Verdean roots. I also have some Native American blood running through my veins as well from my Dad’s side. It’s a CT tribe called The Schaghticoke. We like to keep things local. I went to Norway with my Mom and my Aunt last year and it is just so beautiful over there. I still have a lot of family over there so we hopped around to everyone’s home from Oslo, to Lista, Stavanger, Farson, Horton, and Bergen. My favorite place over there was Lista where my grandfather was born. We visited his childhood home. It is just so peaceful over there. It’s right on the ocean next to a lighthouse with fishing boats and tons of sheep running around on the grass. I grew up with the norwegian culture in my everyday life, especially food. My Grandparents lived next door to us in Marlborough, so I would always walk over and be fed a nice Flatbrødsandwich topped with homemade strawberry jam or Nokkelost.

What do you love most about each of the countries you come from?

I love the fact that they are so vastly different from one another, yet here I am, just one of millions in the world’s cultural melting pot, keeping the multiracial game going strong. I love it and i think it’s beautiful.

“Social media has also started to open doors to a new perception of beauty. It has forced brands to recognize that women want to find their inspiration from other woman they can relate to”

Where do most people think you’re from if they had to guess one ethnicity?

Brazilian…but hey, im not complaining.

Do you think the modeling industry has changed over the years with a larger variety of model’s ethnicities in the scene? And how did you think it did so?

I think it has changed slightly, but nowhere near where it needs to be. What the public sees in magazines, store fronts, and fashion shows should be an accurate depiction of what America is comprised of and unfortunately that is not what is being displayed. The industry is a money game and has many injustices associated with it. I think right now, public outspeak on the issue helps and is the best method for change, but I also hope with America being the melting pot that it is, an inevitable and accurate representation of the country will form itself and America can set the standard for the rest of the world.

Who is your model icon?

Miranda Kerr. She is a business woman, nutritionist, author, fitness guru, and mom with a beautiful elegance about her. I admire the way she has transitioned into creating such a successful and holistic brand around her.

Where do you see the modeling industry in 5 years?

Social media has already started to change the modeling world and will only continue to do so. More and more magazines are becoming digital and models are being booked off of their instagram numbers. Although I personally have some reservations about social media, there is no denying the efficacy of it when it comes to selling and creating a brand. Social media has also started to open doors to a new perception of beauty. It has forced brands to recognize that women want to find their inspiration from other woman they can relate to, meaning women of various ethnicities, ages, and body sizes. Instagram is a platform that has allowed “curvier” models and older models to create their own brand and connect with the consumer in a personal way that creates a longevity in a career that wouldn’t exist without it.

Nina Las Vegas at Good God in Sydney

Nina Las Vegas presented probably one of the steamiest club nights I have been to for a very long time.  The acts included DJEMBA DJEMBA, Monki, Mssingno and Nina herself plus some special local guests joined the talented forray of individuals including Kilter, Basenji, Cosmo’s Midnight, Nicole Millar and Wave Racer.

Never have I thought I would see everyone together in one tight space.  When they all went back to back, things got even more heated and the place turned into a sweat box–the roof was dripping with some liquid I didn’t even know about.  This night shows that there is hope for Sydney nightlife as it was way past midnight and the place was set to pump into the early hours of the morning.

Your heart beat, you share.
Life for all and we overflow with feelings.
You flee.
We run away.
Nothing escapes you.
You’re everywhere and alive.
The noise of the cheeky rythm and unconscious.
An incredible anthem that seems mad.
But is truely real.
Freeze the breeze that running through your body.
Capture the invisible : our feelings.
In your pupils, intersect a thousand ways and one way.
You smile at them.
And we go.
We try.
We made mistakes.
We never regret.
Road and route, picture always, the loyal without judgment, the picture, the wonderful witness.
