Nature’s Girl

Oh how much we love nature. And now we also love Chanel Stewart. The gorgeous long haired model at EMG Models looks like a blooming flower in all the pretty pineapple fields at the North Shore of Oahu. Washington based photographer Adam Guy wanted to do something off the beach and created an exclusive story for us with the laid-back Polynesian vibe. Chanel is wearing RVCA’s new line. And a sweet maybug…

lookbook2014-5

We let out a small secret of us: Our latest obsession here in our team is watching Baywatch. The good old seasons where life seems to be only bout sun, beach and super hot bikinis everywhere. And so we are more then happy to find out about the American lifestyle brand COULBOURNE+ which is created for those who like the minimalist aesthetic as much as we do. Initially created in 2007 as a t-shirt brand it has grown exponentially to its current state of seasonal Limited Edition pieces. Growing up in New York City, founder Rocky Coulboure had the luck of experiencing many different cultures packed into one city. “Our vision is to keep evolving and adding new members to our close-knit community. We hope to continue making simple, exclusive clothing that makes people feel beautiful.” Yeah – we definitley can feel this vision a lot and the Mombasa Bikini is on our wishlist.

Rituals to Bring the End of Long Nights

Amanda Leigh Smith recently shot the winter lookbook for Portland jewelry designer CobraCult featuring the girls Lynnsy Cobarrubia, Skye Sengelmann and Tashina Hill. The Pacific Northwest geography and style are influential for both of them and so they wanted to showcase that along with using the shoot as a good excuse to escape the city. Winter in Oregon means short days and long nights, so they were inspired by all the ways we make the most of their winter. And yes, we know a lot about here in Vienna and Berlin too. Lots of cold, wind and just long winter days. Beautiful jewelry might help. Styling by Tashina Hill, produced by designer and maker of CobraCult Jessica Ilalaole and production assistance by Claire Everson.

Jasmin Bell

You are around London next week? Good! Then come along the Kid Stuff pop up which is a photographic exhibition featuring the works of Anna Victoria Best, Dan Kendall, Henry Gorse, Jasmin Bell and Stewart Capper. For one night only, Kid Stuff will take place on Thursday February 6th between 7:30 and 10:30 PM, allowing guests to glimpse into the works of the five up and coming photographers. With publication experience from i-D to Vice, Huck to Harpers Bazaar and other various accolades and awards, the evening promises to be as visually exciting as it is entertaining. Independently curated, funded and organised, the five exhibiting artists are set host a one off evening of drinks, music and photography in East London’s latest creative space – BOX Studio. The idea behind Kid Stuff is that this five emerging photographers shooting around the theme of youth subculture. From documentary portraits to excerpts from fashion look-books, there will be a variation of work throughout that interesting and timeless theme. “I had the idea to curate, fund and organise an exhibition for ourselves as we wouldn’t normally get the opportunity, so I selected artists that I felt were relevant, who in turn then had an influence on the selection of the other artists. Being up and coming photographers living and working in London it’s not always easy to get these opportunities. The idea is that although we take our work very seriously, we will be having a casual low-brow evening of art, drinks, music and fun.” talks Stewart. With complimentary wine and beers generously donated by Brew Dog, not to mention exciting special guest DJ’s.

Models in the Morning: A talk with Basement Fox (nsfw)

tumblr_mztln0U7Hc1riweqco1_1280

“The idea of modelsinthemorning is to return to the natural beauty of women. Getting away from digital manipulation, body altercations and fall back in love with women as they are.”

What a wonderful prjoect! Photographer Asher Mossa.k.a. Basement Fox caught our attention with his raw and mellow work of beautiful models captured in intimate and natural moments. His images bring across a very sensual, sexy and playful feeling with sunkissed bodies and confident charisma. We got completely absorbed in all his expressive work and wanted to know more.

When did you start modelsinthemorning? And what´s the idea behind?

About a year ago. The idea is to return to the natural beauty of women. Getting away from digital manipulation, body altercations and fall back in love with women as they are. That’s why at first i shot it exclusively on film.

In an interview you said: ” if you don’t grow, you die.” Is this something you only connect to you as an artist – or in general?

That’s a life philosophy.

You also told that you have an obsession with the sixties and seventies. What are the good things of this time. And what do you think is much better nowadays?

One of my favorite quotes ever was by Abbie Hoffman “the ’60s are gone, dope will never be as cheap, sex never as free, and the rock and roll never as great.” Evidently i take this way too seriously. What’s better today? I’ll have to get back to you on that.

A good image has to…

Speak to someone. By someone, i mean some, 1.

When is a woman beautiful in your eyes?

All the time. All women have beauty whether it’s hidden or right out there in front of you.

The most important thing in life is?

Awareness.

Where do you see yourself in a few years?

In Europe shooting, writing and making love in a spanish village.

Hey Maryjane!

“I found that the women who were confident in their bodies were the most beautiful.” We can´t say it often enough how much we love the work by Los Angeles based photographer Giovanni Lipari. Beautiful and natural woman all shot on film which shows the admiration and love for the self confidence of a woman being nude. He captures them in different places. At home or in the nature. But always with the same result: Images that your eyes will be glued at. We are happy to show a new exclusive starring Maryjane McLain shot in LA. Fierce!

magical world of drama, lament and personal scars

Dillon makes incredible beautiful music. Music that touches the soul. And even hurts sometimes. The young native Brazilian talent announced that she gives away her new track You Cover Me taken from the album “The Unknown” (which will be out in March on BPitch Control) as a free download for everyone. “Enigmatic and narrative-driven, ‘The Unknown’ is Dillon’s invitation to us to enter the magical world of drama, lament and personal scars that she creates in her poignant poetry”. You Cover Me turned out  as a quiet and dreamy song seeming like you can catch its breath and listen to it while chasing rainbows.

hey friends. I don’t know how to put this anymore eloquently and intelligently than this: do stuff.
because when you do stuff, you get more stuff….and then that stuff leads to more stuff. and then that stuff leads to you meeting this person to do…yep, you guessed it: more stuff.

I have found that the more open, receptive, and willing to put yourself out there, the better odds the Universe can deliver that which you truly seek. let 2014 be your most magical year–a year that will exceed your expectations–and you can begin now with, you know, doing stuff.

images as the witness of time, telling stories and the passion of life: A talk with Tim Bruening

CHEADS_TIM_BRUENING_03

“People often do not distinguish between beauty and perfection. But there is a big difference between those things. Beauty is not perfection.”

Hamburg based photographer Tim Bruening captures the supposed coincidence, the pearls of daily life with a strong influence of youth culture. Mostly shooting on film you can see his passion for life in all his images. Like snapping the vibe and power of a concert, the cheerful world of kids and the naturalness and pureness of woman. With publications in Neon, Vice, Purple Fashion and many more he is on the road of success and we are more than happy to talk with him about his future plans and influences.

Watching your images is fun as you capture so many different things. What are your influences besides youth culture?

It´s the people who surround me. My friends and family. Specially my grandma taught me how important it is to be interested in life – in friendships and the small things in daily life. I guess that´s why i´m so interested in people and their stories and not in photographing landscapes, or cars or something like that. On the other side my uncle Frank Pabst, who was an artist as well, taught me to believe in myself and my art. He had a very radical attitude towards life and art. He never did anything else, even if he couldn´t make a living with his art he stayed true to himself and his work. It was really good to learn how hard life as an artist can be that early.
He and my grandma really sharpend my eyes for the interesting stuff out there. The weird and funny things, the interesting people. And of course music has always a big influence on me and my work.

And you are snapping moments of life. Have you ever felt riled about not having a cam with you and therefore could not record a situation?

I have these moments even when i have a camera with me. It´s not possible to take pictures of every moment passing by. That´s ok. You just have to learn to deal with it. I´m not going out without a camera that often, but from time to time I do. One day i saw a drunk homeless man in a wheelchair, rolling backwards and spinning around in circles under a bridge at a train station while he was yelling at the people passing by. It was evening and the dawning sunlight was sparkling the whole scene into a beautiful orange light. It was like a scene from a movie. I searched my pockets for a camera, but I forgot it at home, so all i could do was watching this weirdly funny situation. I really need to learn to relax and go out more without a camera in my pocket. Sometimes it can be really stressful to have a camera with me all the time. Then I always have this “I have to take a picture of this or that” stuck somewhere in the back of my brain. That can be really annoying.

Tim Bruening / timbruening.com

Where does your passion for photography come from?

I don´t know. When i´m really into something I can get lost in it. It´s just passion. I can´t describe it. It´s the same thing with music. When I hear or see a band for the first time and i really like them I buy the record, get a shirt and tell everybody i know to come with me to the next concert and if they don´t come with me I tell them what they missed. I really burn for it. I want people to be part of what i hear and see because I care about them.

And what are your working tools?

Most of the time I shoot with a Contax G2. I don´t really enjoy digital photography. Also I´m not really into technical stuff. These facts brought me to the Contax. For me it is the easiest way to get the photos I want to do.
I also do the scans by myself. As I hate editing, shooting on film is very good, cause most of it is already done and you have to deal with it. From time to time I use digital cameras too, but it´s not the same as using film…it’s just sometimes it doesn’t make sense to shoot on film, for technical reasons or because a client wants a selection of 200 photos the same day. Which is ridiculous in a way. Sometimes i take three photos and I know that´s it. It has all changed with digital photography nowadays. It´s normal for most of the photo editors and art directors to ask for so many photos.

Tim Bruening / timbruening.com

I am very fascinated by a potrait series of you called “cinnamon”. Its so lovely and natural. So, when is a woman beautiful in your eyes?

You answered it already. To me a women is beautiful if she is natural. In this series you see this girl who just woke up. It´s like 6 in the morning and the sun is coming up. There´s no make up. No styling. There are natural skin folds and there is pubic hair. That´s real beauty. People often do not distinguish between beauty and perfection. But there is a big difference between those things. Beauty is not perfection.

If we were to hang out in Hamburg for a night to talk about god and life, what place would we end up?

We start at the kitchen of my friends Klaus and Jana and as we are out for talking I guess we would end up in some bar, like “Na und?” or some other old place in St.Pauli. I feel much more comfortable at places where I sit next to a 70 year old drunk man who tells me something about his life and the good old days than listening to guys and girls in a cool bar wearing fancy clothes and talking about what awesome project they are working on right now.

Tim Bruening / timbruening.com

Where do you see yourself in a few years?

At a bar, talking to a complete stranger telling him about the good old times… Haha, no. I don´t know. You never know. It´s this random question everybody asks you. Even the job center asks you questions like this. I could answer this with stuff like: I wanna have a house with a garden, three kids and a beautiful wife – Or I see myself flying around the world, shooting with top models and making shitloads of money – or have my pictures shown in this gallery or that museum. Of course it would be awesome to fly around the world, or see my photographs in some gallery on the other side of the world… But fact is, I could be dead by tomorrow. I lost three people last year. Each one of them was close to me and meant much to me. I´m really trying to deal with it and there is no day i´m not thinking about them. I´m happy to live and have great friends I can hang around with. I don´t need more. If i´m doing good with money in a few years and I can pay my rent, feed the dog…It´s all good.

The most important thing in life is?

Friends.

Your favorite quote?

This is very difficult for me to answer. As I´m a big fan of movies and a huge music fan, there are a bunch of quotes. I do use quotes a lot. As a name of a series or a single photograph, you´ll really find a lot of them in my work.  I used a lot of Antitainment quotes lately. I´m also a big fan of german rap group K.I.Z. I quote them all day and night while talking to people, which can be really annoying if you don´t know them or don´t like them at all. There are complete songs I could quote from Mike Skinner and The Streets. They´re just perfect. But as this is the last question of our interview i would say: Hasta la vista, baby!

Becky Tong shares her favorite songs of the moment

Sometimes the good things enter life at an early stage. And being the daughter of the famous English DJ Pete Tong, music is something that blossomed early in Becky Tong´s life. And besides that the London based sweetheart enchants us with an adorable smile, busy talent and some pretty tunes. Enjoy an exclusive playlist including some personal words and a lovely photo-story shot by Emma Dudlyke.

“Here is a little introduction to one special creative collaboration between two old friends, which took place on a weird late summer’s day at a friend’s house in Stockwell. Music entered my life at an early age, I guess you could say I was one of those kids at Glastonbury with the sound proof headphones. At the moment I’m running a club night with my close friend, a weekly Thursday down at Notting Hill Arts Club called Juicebox, and on top of that I’m a radio plugger and A&R at Relentless Records and on top of that I DJ. Music and fashion are two things I’m very interested in and collaborating the two is something that really excites me. I love DJing for cool fun brands and curating playlists for them to play. Here’s what came out of our day together and to accompany I put together a soundtrack with some of my favourite artists & songs of the moment. Enjoy!”

“Most of my photos are taken during my parties, or with a girl I’m having a date with…” We have some authentic eye-candy for you today by Brazilian based amateur photographer Yuri Rodrigues.

Where does your love for photography come from?
My father has always been an amateur photographer, since my childhood I saw him with a camera on almost all the family trips, – as I got older I inherited his camera, a Pentax Mv.

What do you want to capture?
I began photographing the human putridity, drunk friends, vomiting, dirty girls, today most of my photos are taken during my parties, or with a girl I’m having a date with, but the photos I like most are from my trips. All my photos are analog.

You have a lots of party images. You love to go out? Where can we find you most times?
I promote the party in Brazil called Muscles Cavern, it’s a Witch House Party, most photos are taken at these parties.

You on the weekend?
I’m usually in bars with friends, or at the the Muscles Cavern.

A good image has to?
Capture the moment and the purity
