We already told you some time ago that we are going to have some more wonderful exclusive footage from the talented Jai Jai. This time it´s model Chrissy Elise at Kismet MGMT who gets in front of his lense walking down the roads of Venice Boulevard. “As always my inspiration comes from the streets I live and work on. I am not from LA – I am from the south west of England and one of the main reasons i moved to LA, like most people, is for the year round temperate climate and blue skies. So whenever there is an over cast day in LA i like to take to the streets and shoot in the dull weather as it reminds me of being back in the west country.” Youthful hair, make-up and styling by JoJo Sepulveda. Enjoy!

all that you left me with,
was the gift
to be aware of evanescence.
and that is
everything,
i need to know.
while flowers grow,
and grow,
so many.

alles was du mir damals
hinterlassen hast,
war das geschenk
über das bewusstsein der vergänglichkeit.
und das ist alles
was ich wissen muss.
indessen gedeihen blumen,
so viele blumen.

A talk with Roberto Rubalcava

ROBERTO_RUBALCAVA00

“I try to take as much knowledge and experiences from many countries but also I like to leave things too. I like the exchange of cultures.”

Beyond doubt the work of London based Roberto Rubalcava will carry you to another place. Incredibly fanciful, blurred and as if they are out of a dream the Mexico City raised and born photographer draws his own pictures. Full of romance and desire. Innocent, honest, pure and sincere visuals which he describes himself a mix between fiction and reality focusing on everyday themes exploring and documenting his life and the life of others.

How did the world of photography show up in your life?

When I was in my early 20’s I was looking for an excuse to travel to discover the world. It was such an exciting idea to expand my horizon and to learn about the different cultures.  Photography gave me just that! Actually it gave me the tool to go deeper and get more emotional knowledge. I wanted to be an airline pilot that was too complicated so I bought a camera and set off.

Browsing your images you have a very soft and dreamy style. Is this  something which is a bigger part of your personality?

Yes, people do say I am a hopeless romantic at times. Maybe this is the way it expresses itself in my images?

And what do you want to capture in your pictures?

It is a continuous investigation.

What should people know about you?

I don’t know! They might know it already when they look at my images? info@robertorubalcava ask me what ever you want to know about me.

When is a woman beautiful in your eyes?

I don’t have any set criteria. In fact I see beauty in every woman.

You also have some wonderful travel images – what are you taking with you from other countries?

I try to take as much knowledge and experiences from many countries but also I like to leave things too. I like the exchange of cultures.

The best thing on living in London?

The diversity! London is such an amazing place with many cultures and talented peoples. You can find and learn the best of anything. You name it you will find it here. To me, it is the best city in the world.

Where do you see yourself in a few years?

Directing and photographing documentaries of ecological themes around the world. I have already started with. Bottles of Hope a project of recycle materials in Mozambique.

what’s stopping you from living your dreams?
oh, that’s right…nothing.

no one is going to write your book…
no one is going to present your speech…
no one is going to show your unlimited pool of talents and infinite greatness the way you can.
its really as simple as this: no one else can do what you do best.
so its up to you. 100% you.

Music diary: Shigeto & Krts live in Leipzig

$

There is a good music experience, great music experience… and then those which you surely won’t ever forget.

Seeing live Zach Saginaw aka Shigeto definitely belongs to those unforgettable ones. For a while, I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to catch him on the road through Europe and once I saw the gig at Distillery club with the support of an another amazing artist Krts, it took me less than a few second to decide…

***

February 6th, 2014
It’s a bit early in the evening and I’m already on my way through the city of Leipzig to the [legendary] Distillery club. The city itself looks a bit mysterious as no one is on the street and that’s the same the area around the venue itself. For a while I’m looking for the entrance [yes, praise to the underground venues] and shortly after 8.30 p.m. I finally get throught the door to the inside. The club looks very cosy and with a pleasant atmosphere — exactly what I need for this kind of music. Just a few first visitors stands on the other side of dance floor, watching the opening act – OverDubClub. Those guys represents something what I actually haven’t had a chance to experience yet. Live jamming of beats and hip hop music with live instruments like guitar, bass guitar and couple cool machines. Promising start of the night, I think.

As time passing by, more people come and when Krts steps up on stage, the vibes are getting stronger. He is opening his live set with a beautiful piece named Berlin Girls from his latest EP released on imprint Project Mooncircle. Those melodies that he creates in tracks just put a smile on every face, I can tell. As I saw on a few videos, Krts is a very skilled beatmaker which he perfectly shows at Distillery as well. Variations of rhythmics, from hip hop and beats textures to jungle, he leads the crowd through an exciting music journey. As Shigeto’s time approaches, he comes to stage and starts to prepare his gear. But suddenly, he sits behind the drum kit and joins Krts for a few last minutes of his set. The crowd immediately reacts with a scream, applaus and I’m just speachless. And that is just a beginning.

Shigeto humbly says hi, thanks us for coming and starts telling his music story. During the first minutes of the show he drops track Detroit pt. 1 which sounds on a club sound just good as I expected. Those slowmo heavy beats were just born to be played loud. After a few tracks he finally sits back behind the drum kit and the real show starts. Shigeto’s drumming style is extremely unique as he didn’t get a classic music education but attened lessons at a Detroit jazz drummer. There is something personal in his live performing, the way how he expresses the feelings through music is just exceptional. Roughly in the middle of the show I’m finally realising what is going on… the atmosphere in the club is just so intense that it swallowed me completely! It’s hard to find a proper words for describing, there is definitely some sort of connection between Shigeto’s art on stage and the crowd. Amazing.

The show continues and Shigeto plays more songs from his newest No Better Time Than Now [like Ringleader or Perfect Crime] but some older tracks as well [like Field Day or beautiful R Life]. Unfortunately, two last songs are accomapanied by sound problems but the experience is so strong that even this can’t ruin it. About 11.30 p.m. Shigeto says his final thank you and deservedly dissappears to get some rest. At that moment my ears captures opening track [HTRK - Bendin] of Shape’s DJ set. However, he followes with some trap/hip hop tunes for which I’m just not ready after that previous show so I rather disappear too as I need some time to process everything…

On the way back, I’m deeply thinking how many music experiences like that I have got so far and I think I can count them with my fingers of one hand. It’s the magic of small shows at clubs, definitely. And seeing someone express his dedication for music, it’s just infinitely inspiring… So, thank you, Shigeto.

Stephen Garnett has given us a great pleasure today. For about 45 seconds we stared spellbound at this video for www.rpyouth.com. Valentine’s Day in the neck, we deal more than usual with the topic love. And love is everywhere right? The Los Angeles photographer and filmmaker is also really busy and has recently also directed the video of Zendaya “My Baby“. Stefanie Schneider at Pop-Up Art Gallery Berlin

Stefanie schneiderStefanie Schneider “Untitled”

“I believe, that I create my own aesthetic world. How far that reaches, I don’t know. For me, aesthetics are not stand alone goods, there has to be depth to them.” told us Stefanie Schneider a while ago in an interview.

The Pop-up Art Gallery Berlin will present the beautiful dreamy work of Stefanie Schneider from Friday 14th February to February 19. Taking the American West as her inspiration, Stefanie Schneider’s analog images evoke ideas of masquerade and play, the intense gazes of Schneider’s female characters undermine their playful edge suggesting an unnerving or tragic quality beneath the surface of these glossy women. Collectively the works evoke love, pain, loneliness, alienation and re-discovery and can be seen to suggest a social commentary on America; pointing to the cracks beneath the surface of the glitz and glamour of the ’American Dream’.

Using expired Polaroid film which is then enlarged by hand in her own laboratory, Schneider’s images both emphasis the sun drenched light of California and embody the cinematographic quality of the films of Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone and are reminiscent of forgotten memories, dreams and chance encounters. The blemishes of the expired Polaroid film, further add to Schneider’s intent to represent an imperfect narrative.

Her work will be presented alongside the artist Ana Bathe. Born in Serbia during wartime Ana fled to Canada as a refugee at the age of ten. Raised in Toronto she always felt misplaced leading her to question her own identity. Now home in Berlin, the city and its melting pot of alternative cultures and lifestyles supports her direction of self discovery and fuels her passion to challenge ideas of conventional beauty and gender in her work. And so this exhibition offers interesting look into self portrait photography by two outstanding Berlin based female artists.

Opening times for this exhibition and other info you can find here: www.facebook.com/events

do I go with my head or my heart?

our society is trained to think logically; to do what is “sensible”, what is “right” but sometimes there is a clash between what appears to be “logical” to what feels good at the soul level.

instead of approaching life’s biggest questions with: “what do you think is right?” go with: “how am I feeling right now?”
…are you feeling good? happy? alive?

if you have answered yes, yes, and yes; you are on the right path; but if your answer is no, begin today to make changes in your life for a better, more fulfilling outcome. i encourage you all to be confident, bold, and just go after what you are most passionate about. your happy, more fulfilled you awaits!

Carl Osbourn is a UK based portrait and fashion photographer wanting to portray honest and intriguing stories in his subjects. London Fashion Week provided the perfect stage for him to find plenty of photogenic and interesting people to release the shutter. A gloriously sunny 3rd day of LWF at Somerset House presented a vast array of incredible styles from fedoras to statement jackets, thankfully not hidden under umbrellas nor victims of the gale-force winds of the previous days.  A key trend was the tailored look, being largely attributable to the fact that day 3 closed with the Vivienne Westwood AW 14/15 collection. What an amazing vibe of different styles and personalities!

We are somehow completely captured by that intriguing song and video “Gallant Foxes” by Massive Attack Producer Neil Davidge. It´s the first release out of his debut album ’Slo Light’ that will be released on March 31st 2014 on the label 7Hz Productions. There will be songs featuring Sandie Shaw, Cate Le Bon, Karima Francis and more and judging by what we have heard so far this is going to be just awesome. The distinctive vocals on the song Gallant Foxes are coming from Welsh artist Cate Le Bon. On repeat! And in case you cannot see the video here, please follow that link.
